SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON - November 3, 2014 - SEGA of America Inc. and SEGA Europe, Ltd. today announce a second batch of 3D remasterings exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS hand-held system, spotlighting SEGA's arcade history. Beginning with the release of 3D After Burner II in early 2015, the second batch of titles will be released monthly and include 3D Fantasy Zone, 3D OutRun, 3D Fantasy Zone II, and 3D Thunder BladeTM. Not only does each title deliver a full-fledged vintage arcade experience, recreating the environment down to the mechanical sounds of the arcade machines themselves, but it also adds to the original experience with new modes, options, and original musical tracks. "These games were completely re-built to offer a robust 3D experience that offers more modern gameplay while still keeping true to the original," commented John Cheng, President and COO, SEGA of America. "These are the best versions of some of our most unforgettable games and playing them is just like sitting in an arcade machine". All games will be priced at MSRP $5.99/?4.99/?4.49 and will be available for download in the Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS. Please see SEGA's official blog at http://blogs.sega.com/ for further information and updates, including release date announcements. |

anyways, been playing after burner, just beat it for the first time! granted, it was on lowest difficulty and max lives, but it's a start! now i kinda feel like i know what i'm doing at least a little. out of the ones yet to be released, i've played outrun and fantasy zone on my JP system. outrun is seriously so good, if i had to suggest one game out of all of them to get, it'd be that one. |

Outrun looks quite nice. I used to play Rad Racer when I was younger, so I'll probably give this game a try. I am also interested in playing Fantasy Zone, as that looks pretty neat. Thanks again!

Just tried out Outrun. As a newbie to the game, I have to say that the game is a joy to play even if I kind of suck at it. At least I am doing better at it than I did at Rad Racer when I was much younger ^^. The game really benefits from the 3D and makes me thankful the 3DS has that feature.

It's nice to see Sega bringing yet more 3D Classics to the system, especially since I never played these games before. SoR 2 looks great although based on comments on other game sites, Gunstar Heroes sounds like the most highly anticipated release from this latest batch.

I can't believe they missed Super Monaco GP. There is no purpose for these Genny games to be made in 3D. We've played them hundreds of times already. Who the hell is going to shell out another 6 bucks for each of these things? Especially when they ALL could be bundled together on a single compilation cart(like in Japan). Sega/M2/Nintendo would rather nickel and dime you up the ass, than do something that would please fans of these games. It's greed.
Stick with the arcade sprite-scalers and possibly System-32 stuff. You know.... games we haven't played to death already.... |

Speaking as someone who definitely prefers arcade ports, I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with porting Genesis games. Yeah, I own tons of versions of Sonic and Streets of Rage, but I can definitely say the same thing about Out Run or Space Harrier. What these versions bring to the table, in my eyes, are portability (though some of them do already have portable versions, these tend to be better and on a platform I take with me more often), and extra features. The primary issue, in my mind, is how the Genesis games get the short end of the stick when it comes to new features.
Streets of Rage 2 is already out on the JP eShop, and once again the new content is a bit disappointing. Additions like SoR1 and 3 playable characters for SoR2 (as in Streets of Rage Remake), Knuckles and Hidden Palace for Sonic 2 (as in Taxman's Sonic 2), and the Prototype Version of Gunstar Heroes (as in Treasure Box) would make them much more valuable ports. As is, they're nice to have, but it's disappointing that they're versions inferior to already existing ones, when on the other hand, the arcade ports are the absolute best versions of those games. Either way, the fact that these 3 games were tacked on to the end of Wave 2 has me thinking that they're just to tide people over until Wave 3, which will have more proper arcade ports. |

People keep saying this is just filler until Wave 3? That is just dreaming because if Wave 2 doesn't sell well, then there will be NO 3rd wave... And I don't see overpriced Genesis games(that I can play on my phone for free) to be getting alot of downloads. Seriously, 6 bucks? Add all those titles up, compared to what the price of a compilation cart would cost. It's ridiculous the way they are trying to hustle. I hear it's harder to port Genny games than arcade ports to the 3DS, according to M2. Why bother then? Not very tactical by Sega, it's no wonder they are about to die. I'm not gonna argue which ones I own are truly arcade perfect, but I have a few solid ports of those games myself (Shenmue 2 for Out Run, both Shenmues and PS2 Sega Ages (not the gross 3D one) for Space Harrier), and there's a good number of others out there too, like the Saturn versions you mentioned, though those are kinda pricey and not so easy to come by as a result (even the recently released Yakuza 0, presumably, contains near arcade perfect ports). Still, that's getting kinda far from what i'm trying to say, lol. You're right in that you can't pick them up on near any platform like you can for Genesis games, though.
I think the subset of the consumer base who would only purchase a 3D Classic if it's an arcade perfect port is smaller than the number of people who would simply jump at the opportunity to play Sonic 2 on their 3DS, though. The fact that they'd release Sonic 2 and Streets of Rage 2 following the original versions of both leads me to believe they were a success, otherwise they wouldn't be made (and the general online reaction I've seen to the Wave 2.5 announcement was very positive). Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it being a flop, I'm rather confident that the demand is there. When it comes down to it, I do agree that I'd like to see more arcade ports and consider them to be much more valuable, but I'm happy to see these Genesis ports too. I don't have any official way to play Gunstar Heroes on the go, for instance (no iPhone). As to unofficial means, well, that's something else entirely, but we can't really discuss it here. |

On a positive note, Sega/M2 is remastering the arcade version of Thunderblade , which will be coming westwards in the coming days. EDIT: I also agree with what SRT posted just before me.

Altered Beast can be explained very simply. It was the packin game at launch and has since become infamously iconic for non-flattering reasons. They were too lazy to even bother with the superior arcade port. So yeah, the reason for Altered Beast is laziness... really easy to poop out another port of Genny AB. If you own an android device you can play these games for free on the go. Pretty sure this is another forum scared to discuss such topics so I won't delve deeper. Who is going to "jump" at the oppurtunity to play Sonic 2 or SOR 2 again? Compared to ports of Super Monaco GP, Turbo Outrun, or Power Drift? Which most people have never played proper ports of? They have GA2, Arabian Fight, and Rad Mobile as System32 possibilities, they need to start digging deeper. A constant 20 plus years of shi++y Sonic games, and treating their most popular IPs like forgotten history, is finally biting them in the ass. Imagine if Nintendo treated their most popular franchises like Sega does? |

Perhaps I should qualify my statement by stating that Sega focuses on doing 3D remasters of well-known titles that are still well-liked and discussed today. Games like Ecco and SoR2 are relatively unique and consequently well-remembered unlike games like Columns which were heavily inspired by other franchises.
With that said, I support your idea of Sega prioritizing titles that have seldom, if ever, been ported or remastered on modern consoles. It is always neat when the Wii U or 3DS get such titles and I would love to see more.

The best things about Altered Beast are the design and atmosphere, but the gameplay is meager and repetitive. You could probably get all the Altered Beast experience you need from a walkthrough video, but it's an experience you do want to have, believe me.

3D Streets of Rage 2 will be coming to the west on the 16th of July. This was revealed through a Nintendo eShop listing, so we are pretty sure that this is set in stone. The game will set players back $5.99. |

Nice to see Power Drift getting the 3D Classics treatment; however, I am a little concerned when M2 says that the game is a bonus title they included with this collection as none of the bonus games from the first retail collection made it outside of Japan. Here's hoping it gets localised.

Pardon the self-promotion, but here are my reviews for 3D Streets of Rage 2 and 3D Gunstar Heroes in case there are some interested in them:
