Arrow 2004-2014: A Decade with Nintendo DS

Nintendo's dual screen handheld will be celebrating its tenth anniversary on November 21, 2014 in North America. It is the highest selling handheld of all time and the second highest selling video game hardware in general with a whooping 153 million sales worldwide.

Original DS phat model (2004)

The launch retail box that came with Metroid Prime Hunters First Hunt demo:

DS Lite (2006)

DSi and DSi XL (2009)

What were some of your best memories with the DS? Which DS games did you enjoy the most? Any particular new features at the time you loved on the DS moving from the Game Boy line-up?

Would you like Nintendo to continue to produce dual screen portables in the future or would you prefer them to return to one screen?

Any thoughts are appreciated.

I like the DS Lite build. It felt good, played GBA games, and it was really bright and colorful.

Mine stopped working a year before the 3DS launched in Japan I believe, which was the main reason I wanted a 3DS in the first place. I mostly played Pokemon Platinum and Mario Kart DS on it, but it was also the console that got me into the Ace Attorney games and rhythm game genre. One feature I didn't really appreciate until later during a roadtrip was PictoChat - Something I wish 3DS could do. My all time favorite game on it is The World Ends with You though.

I honestly don't care what Nintendo decides to go with on their next handheld. Dual screen or single, or whatever works so long as the right software goes with it.

Easily the best handheld ever, and a contender for best game system ever. I'm currently at about 85 games for it, and still going strong.

The DS game I played the most, without a doubt, is Mario Kart DS. In addition to how strong it is mechanically (it's still my favorite Mario Kart game), it was super hard to get 3 stars in everything, and was the first game on Nintendo's Wi-Fi service, so I have literally hundred of hours and matches logged in it. Other than that, I was also totally obsessed with Animal Crossing: Wild World. It was my first Animal Crossing game, and by far the one I played most. I have fond memories of playing it with my sister on the way to school every morning. I never actually played with people other than her a whole lot, but I had more than enough I wanted to do in single player.

Most people who know me probably know my favorite game on the DS is Moero! Nekketsu Rhythm Damashii Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2 (aka Ouendan 2). The whole Ouendan series are the standout games on the DS, imo. Touch screen gameplay is perfect for rhythm games, and beyond being technically sound, it has style to spare. I still go back and play them and see little details I missed. They're seriously some of my favorite games of all time.

I could seriously go on and on for hours about the DS, and talk about all the games on it I loved, but there's so many. It's just such a good system, and I'm still enjoying it more than ever a decade after its release. It's really the perfect crossroads of quality, quantity, and variety.

Love Plus is on the DS. Why don't you go buy that and then marry your waifu, the DS

As one of the younger folks on here, I can say that this is the system that got me into gaming. I remember round 2009 when my sister decided to get a lime green ds lite. That fateful day led me to becoming interested in it and eventually gaming in general. I owe much to the ds, with 1000s of hours clocked on it. It was also the first system I ever found on the ground (Early 2010 I found an intact blue one). Still collecting games for it to this day, it's like a gold mine of wealth that I haven't even scratched the surface of! Very sturdy system, dropped it many a time.

Ahh yes. The phat DS was indeed where my memories did live far and beyond with mario kart DS and Metroid Prime: Hunter over wi-fi. I didn't have it at home, so I had to go to a cafe or McDonald's to play online. Same with the GTS on Pokemon pearl. Good times

The DS had great games but I don't like the system itself. The phat is just ugly while the lite feels cheap and flimsy. The DSi was a major improvement with the matte finish and volume buttons that doubled as brightness control. Still don't really like dual screens, though.

The games that stick out to me the most are Pokemon and Ouendan. The first was easily my biggest time sink on the system and the second is the best use of the touch screen that I know of. Metroid Prime Hunters is another favorite of mine.
