Platform: Nintendo 3DS
Developer: 1UP Studio; Level-5
Publisher: Level-5 (JP); Nintendo (NA, PAL)

STORY
Citizens of the peaceful land of Reveria go about their daily lives with little interruption but one day the sky begins to fall- literally. Aided by a mysterious talking butterfly, you must unite the many peoples of Reveria in order to save your world.

GAMEPLAY

Fantasy Life is an RPG/SIM that allows you to choose from 12 different life classes:
  • Paladin
  • Mercenary
  • Hunter
  • Magician
  • Miner
  • Woodcutter
  • Angler
  • Cook
  • Blacksmith
  • Carpenter
  • Tailor
  • Alchemist
Paladin, Mercenary, Hunter, and Magician are all combat classes each specializing in a different weapon: longsword/shield, greatsword, bow/arrow, and staff respectively. Anglers, Woodcutters, and Miners must travel out in the field in order to find fishing spots, trees, and rocks. Outside of aesthetic differences the crafting classes (Blacksmith, Cook, Carpenter, Tailor, Alchemist) are nearly identical as they all implement a mini-game in order to produce various goods.

Each Life has the following ranks:
  1. Novice
  2. Fledgeling
  3. Apprentice
  4. Adept
  5. Expert
  6. Master
  7. Hero
  8. Legend
  9. God (DLC Exclusive)
There are certain challenges you must complete in order to increase your rank. You can master one class or them all. It's up to you but certain Lives complement each other e.g. Woodcutter and Carpenter and in order to complete a challenge you may have to switch your Life at the guild office temporarily in order to get the materials you need.

Fantasy Life also supports local and online multiplayer and by teaming up with a friend you can defeat enemies and trade items.

*In order to complete the story, the game does not require you to master a particular class.

Other Features:
  • Character customization including different body types and skin tones
  • Ability to take screenshots
  • Customizable homes

ORIGIN ISLAND DLC
Price: ?7.19 (UK)/€7.99 (EU)/$8.99 (USA)

*** Owners of the Origin Island DLC will NOT be able to communicate with players who do not own it. ***

Features:
  • New area, recipes, materials, and quests
  • God rank
  • Extra character customization
  • Pet birds and dragons
  • New holiday home and furniture
  • Friendship System
  • Exclusive items available for purchase with Lunares Coins

Oh my gosh that trailer. I think this will be my first RPG once I get my 3DS, if you can even call it that, since it's an RPG/Simulator.

I haven't played the Japanese version, but there are some videos out there. Here's episode 1 of a Japanese version lets play. (Link).

I don't think I've seen any Japanese version reviews. Personally, I think this game will be one of my 3DS favorites.

Added after 2 Hours 4 minutes:

Uh oh. Full review: http://www.rpgamer.com/games/other/n...ifestrev1.html
Spoiler!

I've been watching this couple play. They played the Japanese version and explain the basics in English without giving away any story spoilers. LinandKo

There are also some videos of a guy playing what looks to be somewhat "end game" content with two of his buddies. In several videos they kept returning to some tower that seemed to get harder the further up they get. 123 I've even seen a shadow version of a similar tower in another video.

I've personally played the very beginning of the Japanese version and have tried a few of the classes. Each have been fun even early on. The customization is surprisingly rich and the combat system is very accessible and promising - but neither are as deep as your more serious rpgs. This wasn't a problem for me because it was still a blast!

This is one of my most anticipated titles this fall. I look forward to getting it and trying it out.

I went out today to buy Fantasy Life.
As it turns out I was a month early...
Me and my brother both wanted the game for our vacation, but I guess we have to wait.

I'm really looking foreward to this title. I saw the trailers and the world is supposed to be huge! I'm very curious if the game meats the expectaions.

Any news on what online features will be like?

I find it hard to find anything concrete on this game.
The Fantasy Life we get in Europe is actually called Fantasy Life Link in Japan.
Owners of Fantasy Life JP can download the additional content of Fantasy Life Link in the eShop.

I'm also very curious about the online/multiplayer features of this game.
I hope it's just like a MMORPG. But you visit the world of the host and act in it.
That way a knight can invite friends to do quests that don't apply to the knight class, but allows him to get the resources.

I'm pretty sure North America get the link expansion included, so we shouldn't be missing any features.

It's a shame any hype for this game is being clouded over by Smash. I actually want this game just as much.

Unfortunately, from what it sounds like, Nintendo is releasing a DLC package with the extra content (called Origin Island) on day one release of Fantasy Life. It will not automatically be included with the game.

Me and my fiance both have this pre-ordered, looks fun! Will be our first 3DS RPG (again, if you could call it that). Excited for the online, hope it works well!

That's a mayor bummer. I saw a video (youtube?) about Fantasy Life and he stated that the Link content will be included for every release outside Japan, a new version in Japan and the Link content as DLC for Japan.
If the Link content is 'extra' I might have to rethink getting this game.

I guess Nintendo saw an oppertunity to make some more coins. And we all know Mario loves coins.

This is a Level 5 game. Nintendo is just localizing it.

Yes , I've played the game, my review is here http://wp.me/p43dCw-2E. It's a great game and I'm surely getting the English version too. I found I missed too much of the story as I'm not fluent in Japanese.

By the way, the Link content to be able to wifi was an expansion pack there. So at least we get that included!

Very nice! How would you rate it on a scale of 1-10?

I'd definitely rate it with an 8 or 9. If you love the questing part of Rune Factory, you'll love this. I haven't done much yet in the way of house decorating and such. Can't really compare it to Animal Crossing I think.

What makes it so cool is that you can fight if you want to, but you don't have to!

Ahhh I am so conflicted...
I've been waiting for this game for 2 years and it's finally releasing!
Buuuuuuuut... I also really wanted Super Smash Bros. And the problem is I don't have the $$$$ to get both at the same time. So I don't know which to purchase first ugh :/

I put 8 hours in this game so far and it is definitely more a rpg, than a life simulation. Many quests and fighting to do I love it!

Can anyone help we decide whether to get this game or not?
What I'm looking for is something that can be played in short bursts(20-60m) and that is relaxing and fun.

Going to get this game and wanted to ask the people that have the game already. How is the 3D in the game? Is it always in 3D or a disappointment like Pokemon X/Y?

It's always 3D. It's not outrageously strong but at the same time not very noticeable. But there is no ghosting which is nice.

Overall I would say the graphics are wayy better than in Link Between Worlds (Except 30 FPS vs 60), which is nice considering it's a 2 year old game.

I'm around 8 hours into the game now and I love it. My brother also got it and we teamed up for 3 hours or so. The multiplayer is also very nice And rewarding for both players.
You not only support the other player, you also complete quests in your own game while in the other players world.

This game is definately more RPG than anything. I started out as a paladin, so I can't speak for other classes (like alchemist or blacksmith) that have some rythm based minigames for crafting.
Reminicent of a very crude Cooking Mama.

As for playing in short bursts, you can't save from menu. There are save points scattered throughout the world. They are never more than 10-15 minutes apart.

Had to stop playing this at 1 AM last night because my 3DS's hinge snapped x.x Maybe it's a good thing I had an excuse to stop..

Currently an expert Blacksmith and Adept Carpenter and Woodcutter. I'd be higher ranked but I can't get better rrsources cause I haven't advanced with the story.

I'm currently anticipating this game more than Smash and Pokemon ORAS combined!

It's been a while since I've been on these forums but I came back to let everyone know this game is really fantastic!

I'm already playing it for 15h, started off as a Hunter, switched to Angler for a bit to learn fishing skills and back to Hunter now to finish more of the hunter quests

I really like the graphical style, the music is very nice too! It's really hard to put it down when you start playing, I checked my 3DS Activity Log and my average playtime of this game is around 2 hours, while for other games it's less than 1 hour

It's been a long time since I played such a wonderful game! I'd give it a 8.5/10, maybe even a 9/10 but I'll play it some more and see how long it lasts

Bloody netherworld!
I'm really bummerd out right now.
Just got back from holiday, popped the game in my 3DSXL... no save!
Fantasy Life stores it's save on the system instead of the cardridge, forcing me to play FL on my regular 3DS.
This whole system specific save/data is getting really annoying.

I'd expect Nintendo wants people to buy as many systems as possible, this really isn't helping.
Nintendo really needs to allow multiple 3DS' on one account and keep saves on cartridge.

I have sunk about 30 hours into the game, and yes, it is worth it and worth playing. The game is fantastic and can't put it down sometimes.

Haven't even got that far into the main story as there is so many side quests. Well worth it.

This is interesting. Can anyone else confirm that Fantasy Life cartirdges store their saves on the system like digital copies?

We might be seeing this a lot more as an anti-cheat measure.

Yes, you are right. It is a digital copy. But since it's tied to a system you can't swap games (and saves) to another 3DS without system transfer.
This prevents youf from playing on two alternating systems.
I for example, use my 3DSXL at home and my 3DS on the go. The 3DS is just more practical to carry. And this is a shame, I'm actually considering selling my 3DSXL now. Which would have made it a huge waste of money.

Apart from this I am loving Fantasy Life. I already put 18 hours in (I'm too busy to play longer -_-). Level 5 did a great job.

I think there is a good chance we could see this happen in pokemon too. If not for ORAS then I'd say the next games in the series for sure.

I do not know why Nintendo started making saves to the system, instead to the cart like older titles. But i think i might have to do with hacking, not too sure. But yes, we will see most games move down that path. There is some sort of "create a save backup", not too sure what is does though.

I'm pretty sure you won't be disappointed. It's a really charming game. Zelda x Dragon Quest x Animal Crossing.

I'm "only" at 60 hours in because I had to switch to my OG 3DS which I don't enjoy using.

Here's me :3

I really did not expect to enjoy this game as much as I am. Already nearly 4 hours in. The only thing I don't care for is when I get locked into my sword swings as a paladin and can not dodge the enemy attack. Not into blocking as much as dodging. Maybe I need to start doing that more.

Started as a paladin and have since started as a miner, but I enjoy paladin more. Thought I needed to switch lives to mine ore while being a paladin, but turns out I don't have to. Pretty excited to try out the angler job.

I started off as an angler.

I always end up fishing a lot in these kinds of games so might as well.

There are several ranks you can achieve:

Spoiler!

I think the final rank has challenges you can only access through the DLC. Other than the standard stat bonus that you get with each improved rank, I'm not sure what other rewards are possible.

I played a couple of chapter in this game in the Japanese version, and Now I restarted it in English. It's an awesome game. Personally I'd recommend you start your life in one of the fighting jobs, like paladin or magician, as you do have to fight enemies and that's the best way to go about and roam the plains. But you can change jobs back and forth pretty easy and do jobs liked alchemist and miner in between, making use of all the materials you come across on your journeys. The cool thing is that even when you're a magician, you can still use your mining tools and such!

Thanks guys, also is closing and relaunching the game really the only way to play as your other character?

I started off as an angler then I went to cook, tailor, hunter, blacksmith, miner, and now I'm working on the paladin class since I'm pretty weak combat-wise.

Just started a new Life as a Magician and it really sparked my interest in the game again :] Magician is very OP... Water element AoE attack is ranged and flinches even the boss monsters. It's a lot of fun.

Only problem is that after I reset my stats and invested everything into INT and VIT, now I can't cut down or mine any of the "boss" trees or mining nodes D: Even though I'm Legend class in both Miner and Woodcutter.

Been enjoying the game a lot so far. Managed to get my Hunter, Blacksmith, and Carpenter to hero rank.

Do any of you know where to get Tool Upgrade Stone+? I've gotten some before, but I wasn't paying attention where/who I got them from.

Also to actually answer your question, the game is a lot of fun. You get 12 different lives to choose from, and whatever skills you learn stay with your character, so you can start learning fishing and then switch over to Miner and still be able to level up fishing. Everything seems to have levels and exp attached to it (even running!) There is a main story in the game, though were I am at I haven't progressed through too much of it. It is great to explore the woods around the town, and level up different lives at the moment. Haven't tried multiplayer yet, but I have grouped with some AI NPC's in the game. You can have a party of 3, I believe.

pets include dogs, cats, birds and dragons

I love FL. One of my top five favorites for the 3DS so far. It may just be the end of me...

I wrote about the casual strategy I set up for myself before I started the game. I wanted a little structure when it came to balancing out my time with the RPG aspect of it (especially concerning stat attribution) versus the life simulation.

Character: Tinker (Angler turned Magician)
First pet: Trinket (White cat)

House interior:

Tinker's Log Cabin exterior:

I, uh, obviously went along with my passion for sweets when it came to my house design. Hence the whole "Happily Candied" name.

This game has elements reminicent of Final Fantasy, Animal Crossing, and Atelier Annie. The similarity to FF is the job class (Life path in FL) as well the typical fantasy tropes. The similarity to Animal Crossing is the act of discovering, collecting, and decorating. Finally, the similarity to Atelier Annie is the collecting and using of components to build something (the alchemy life path will remind of this game).

Overall, I'm enjoying this game...

things I like:
1. Life Paths. I haven't delved too deep into the game yet. I decided to start of with Alchemy and will eventually move onto Wizard since I believe both paths have synergy with each other.

2. The quest system. There are 3 different types of quests. One is from your Life Path. The other is from the butterfly you meet (mostly to get you to become familiar with the game). Finally, the 3rd type is from talking with the various inhabitants of this world.

3. The rpg elements such as leveling; obtaining better items, weapon, armor, and armor; fighting monsters.

4. Exploring, collecting, interacting, building, and decorating.

Things I did not like:

1. So far there is only one which is that slow down occurs way too much...and I'm not even online when it occurs!

Shark hat is one of my favorite clothing items in the game.

You get a whale hat for achieving Hero rank in Angler and it's also great.

I achieved Legendary rank in Angler.

The golden swordfish was relatively easy to catch but it took awhile for it to appear.

Hi folks, added some of you via friend codes. Not sure why ninty makes it such a pain to befriend people on their consoles. Wasn't there some issue? Anyway I am looking for some adventurers. Got sidetracked with Bravely Default for a bit.

I got the game Friday, and I haven't been able to put it down! It's literally more addicting than Animal Crossing. I guess it feels like more than AC because it has the whole RPG element. The thing I love about it is that there's so much to do. I don't think I will ever be able to do everything possible in FL! In AC, I ran out of things to do once I unlocked almost everything.

I've been playing FL so much, and I've tried quite a few of the lives out. I really enjoy mercenary and blacksmithing . I'm only level 19, but there is a lot to do. I finally defeated Silverfang! I really like fighting in the Tortuga place in Port Puerto.

Anyways, is anyone else a merc? I feel like I'm moving too quickly, and not leveling up properly. I'm an expert mercenary, but I'm only level 19...

Trust me, you will never be able to 100% this game. xD There's simply too much to do. And every time you think you've done it all, something else is unlocked.

Got a sweet Deer Mount today. :3

Also level 100 and every other job except Paladin at God Rank. Geez x.x

As someone who really enjoys cute games like Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon and various RPG's, I was surprised I didn't really get into Fantasy Life.

I really wanted to like this game. I don't sell my games unless I really dislike them, so I dunno whether to sell Fantasy Life or keep it to give it another chance some other time in the future when I've got nothing new to play.
