Finally...

The game is out... well, yesterday. Europe only though, or I would have bought it already. Damn you region lock!

Europe only? No fair! Hopefully it gets localised (even if only on the eShop).

On a side note, I guess that would explain why I only heard about this game just now. I hope to see some gameplay footage soon.

Here's some gameplay footage. While the game appears to be only composed of one-car rally races (where you compete against the times of other CPUs), the gameplay appears to be smooth. It is a shame it has not been announced for NA.

Wonder if North America will get this game?

Guess what just popped up on the NA eShop (at least in Canada). There is even a demo for the game. The only bad news is the game is selling for $41 CAD, a rather excessive price for an eShop only game.

Yep, I was shocked to see it pop up on the eShop with no warning! I had used my brother's French 3DS to download the demo earlier because I thought I'd never get to play the game, so I was really surprised to see that we got it so soon after Europe.

So obviously I bought the game. I completed the main Season mode, unlocked three of the six "Super Special Stages" as they call them, and I have three drivers (the 1-star driver you begin the game with, then a 2-star driver and a 3-star driver).

The races in the main mode are unlocked entirely by winning enough points to get to the next rally. There is a total of 100 points you can get for each rally, and you need to get 80 to get to the next rally. The game is on the easy side so I had no problem with that, I finished first in all races without too much trouble, though obviously the game gets a bit harder as you go on.

The drivers and super special stages however are unlocked solely with the in-game currency. You earn those monies by winning races, drifting, and air time. You'll need to replay the courses a lot if you want to unlock all six super special stages and more drivers as the prices are pretty steep, but luckily there are plenty of races and they are varied enough that you'd surely be replaying the stages anyway because it's fun. It just gives an incentive to keep playing.

The game actually looks nice in my opinion. It's nothing extraordinary but we've been so used to crappy-looking cheap Western games and considering Firebrand does not have a stellar record on that front, that it's nice to see this game looking like what you'd expect it to look like on this type of hardware. I think the fact that there's an iOS/Android version is probably why the game looks better than it would have as a 3DS-only title.

The game controls well, it's not too arcade-y, but it's not too difficult either. There is a good sense of speed, sharp turns, narrow roads, and various different types of terrain, so it's a ton of fun. There is a system that I'm sure the players who don't want to be too frustrated will find very welcome, which allows you to rewind up to 5 seconds at any point during the race as many times as you want, but it's going to cost you in-game currency. I find it very cool because even if it seems a bit like cheating, it allows you to get better at taking corners, handling jumps, not crashing in trees etc. without having to start over the entire race just because you messed up -- and you will mess up a lot, it's a rally game after all.

You get three different camera views -- far, close, and bumper. The far view is the easiest. The close view is good so that you can take a good look at the car models, which without being absolutely fantastic, are in my opinion the best of any racing game on the system. It's much harder though. The bumper view provides the most thrills as you really get to feel every bump and every jump.

Onto the negatives:
- There is a weird graphics glitch in the last two races of the Season mode where there is a puddle of water in each that is missing its texture (!) and so your car goes through just white emptiness. The water texture is not very good looking either, it clashes with the more realistic, better-looking environments, so luckily you only see it twice.
- There is another glitch which reboots the 3DS after finishing the last race in the season mode. Your race is saved, so it's not a huge deal, but it happens every single time you finish that last race.
- The two Argentina super special stages are described as taking place during night time with rain conditions, when they actually take place during the day time in a sunny and dry environment. Not sure what's up with that. It's actually a little disappointing as there ends up being no race with rain conditions, which I was looking forward to for the sake of added variety.
- The framerate is really smooth and stable in 2D, but takes a huge hit with 3D enabled, which is a big deal in a racing game. Play it in 2D only.
- No online leaderboards is disappointing. There's no multiplayer of any kind either.
- You can only turn the HUD completely on or completely off. It's too bad as less clutter on screen is really nice but getting the direction signs is essential and you only have them with the HUD on.

Overall, I'm so damn glad the 3DS finally gets its first genuinely good realistic racing game. I had given up hope. It's the best racing game on the system in my opinion. I guess you could make an argument for Ridge Racer 3D, but eh, that was at launch, doesn't seem superior in many ways (it does have local multi though, but no download play), and was super arcade-y, so they're two very different kinds of gameplay.

If you like racing games, get it. I have or had Ridge Racer 3D, Asphalt 3D, Driver Renegade, F1 2011, Nascar Unleashed, Need for Speed The Run, Spy Hunter, Crash City Mayhem, and ATV Wild Ride 3D, and WRC is the best one.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to write a comprehensive review Yanikun. I would like to get this when the price drops. I played the demo, which seemed pretty good (certainly better than any DS sim driving game I played). The fact you enjoy it more than Ridge Racer 3D (my favourite non-kart 3DS racing game) is refreshing to hear. I was worried that title would remain unrivalled in terms of quality.

It is also good to know that my prediction of the 3DS getting a competent sim racing game a few years into its life-span has come true. Again, I will wait for a price drop (unless a retail version becomes available), but am glad you like it.

I should note that I haven't played the PSP and Vita WRC games so I have no idea how it compares, for those who have played the previous handheld installments.

But yeah in my opinion Ridge Racer is nice, but at the end of the day the racing feels the same no matter what track you're playing on because it's basically always the same type of road. It's very good at what it does, Ridge Racer gonna Ridge Racer, but the racing is "deeper" in WRC if that makes sense, it has more environmental variety. Of course not everyone will like to be racing "by themselves," as opposed to having other cars on the road to pass. But I enjoyed V-Rally 3 on the GBA a lot so it's really cool to have a similar game on the 3DS -- without being as strong a graphical achievement of course.

I totally get what you mean. In the WRC demo, I noticed a difference in the road terrain I was on, something that is lacking in RR3D. While it would be nice to race against other physical opponents, the courses in this game, like those of AiRace Speed are not conducive to multi-vehicle racing, which is fine with me.
