Default Sony Pictures vs North Korea (?)

Some time ago, Sony Pictures was hacked and various information from upcoming Sony films to private correspondence between employees has been leaked worldwide.

New evidence says North Korea was responsible for the cyber attack. This was apparently in retaliation for Sony's upcoming film The Interview which features the assassination of Kim Jong Un.

Major theaters also began receiving threats of violence if they were to screen the film. This lead to AMC, Regal, and Cinemark to abstain from showing the film. In response, Sony has decided to cancel The Interview's Dec. 25th release date.

It is unknown at this point when, if, or how The Interview will be released.

fyi, the death scene was already shown, so I have no idea what preventing this film from being shown is supposed to do.

First time I've heard about this. Making a movie like that was a stupid idea to begin with, they knew it would only throw fuel to the fire between North Korea and US...

Assasinating ANY actual person (Not a fictional one like in all those Hollywood movies) in a movie is offensive. And North Korea isn't playing around.....

I can't believe Sony wasn't expecting this. Honestly I think the premise of the movie is in bad taste, even if it is Kim Jong-un. Making a movie about the assassination of any current world leader is just dumb.

Dude's a dick anyway. I'm looking forward to seeing how this plays out though.

North Korea made some statements about the movie a couple months ago I believe. I think we even had a thread about it here?

And maybe it is offensive but this was a thing a couple or so years back, and nothing was done then so...

Sony knew ahead of time that the movie would cause controversy. If you're going to fund a film like this, stick to it. Don't just chicken out at the very end.

I still find the film to be incredibly tone deaf.

I agree. What's going on in North Korea is not a joke. The people who live under Kim Jong-Un's regime have to face unspeakable cruelty and terror.

Well, that was with puppets and it was extremely cartoonish in regards to its portrayal of the country.

This is live-action and therefore a lot more plausible. North Korea doesn't want a film that features the successful assassination of their leader.

This is a Rogen/Franco movie though - It being live action doesn't make it less cartoonish lol.

lol there's been millions of movies about assasinating the US president and you don't see anyone making a fuzz about it

North Korea only makes empty threats, they know if they actually try to attack even 1 civilian in the world they're good as dead. Sony and all the cinemas that gave in to terrorism and blackmail are cowards.

I don't like how the threat of violence is being used in an attempt to stop the film from releasing but the entire movie's premise is still pretty racist and crappy.

Yeah but let the critics and audience judge that and refuse to see it based on the movie's own merits. What Sony is doing is giving in to blackmail and setting a precedent for more cases like these.

That's because in those movies the President of US is always Denzel Washington or something instead of the real president.

And 99% of the time Jack Bauer shows up at the last minute to save the day.

I really wanna see the film but I can understand why he is pissed off, who wouldn't be annoyed by a film about their assassination?

They are denying claims though...

This is literally out of the realm of South Park. Seth Rogen and James Franco make a controversial movie that leads to cyber terrorism and a response from the white house.

It's like an on-demand episode synopsis.

I'm glad the movie got cancelled. Seth Rogan is neither a good actor nor funny. they should have put Morgan Freeman in it. Koreans are afraid of black people.

Now, there's evidence suggesting it wasn't North Korea but someone from the inside like a pissed off Sony employee.

this is not how the film industry works. It's more like this: they release 10 movies and lets say 8 of them are some weird crap that never makes their money back. the other 2 are high profile games that makes their money multi fod back, thus covering also the other 8 "crap" movies. The Interview is not a high profile movie.

If that were true, then we'd have studios bankrupting left and right.

The Interview had a $44 million budget including marketing making it $75 million total that Sony has invested in the film. Source

It's true that studios make a ton of crap movies but many of them are low budget so they turn a profit on them regardless.

well, that's just how the movie industry works. don't forget that alot of large movie companies have went bankrupt and SONY is losing alot of money over the last decade. MGM shut down and doing only license stuff for 007 or so. WB is one of the few that actually makes big money with their DC deal and Harry Pothead.

Sony has other issues outside of the film industry.

But Hollywood does NOT make films with the expectation that they will cause them to lose money. That is not true at all.

they dont make movie with the expectation to lose money but they know that most movies don't even cut even. So they bank on the ones that makes money back multifold. Not every movie is a hit like Xman, LotR and whatever got Dwayne Jonson in it XD

sources? it's not something I read up on the internet. Back in college I knew people who worked in the film industry and some I still have contact with. you don't have to believe me but why would I lie about it. i gain nothing by telling bull**** here. I'm neither part nor do I have anything invested in the film industry.

It's how most industry's work. You invest and hope that one investment becomes your new gold mine.
