Default Question about how to restore old online id

Hey everybody, I have a quick question, and actually I tried to call the Nintendo Customer service first but they're closed today. Anyways,we bought my son a 3DS XL for Christmas,he lost his previous 3DS a few months back (with a brand new Super Smash Bros. cartridge in it plus many downloaded titles).I assumed I could just log back into his old Online ID and redownload those games that I had previously purchased, about 10 games in all. Well when I went to log in or link ID,it said that ID was already linked to another 3DS,which it was linked to the 3DS that was lost. So how do I go about being able to do this? I know it said something about doing a system transfer but since I don't have the old 3DS I don't know how I can possibly do this. I'm not going to be happy if the several hundred I spent on those games cannot be reapplied towards redownloading these titles. I'm definitely not going to pay again for games I've already paid for. Any help in this situation would be greatly appreciated! !

You have to talk to customer service and they can reset the Nintendo Network ID, as well as invalidate it on the lost 3DS. I don't think there are any shortcuts besides calling customer service.

Man, that sucks. That is Nintendo for you, still stuck with the idea that its good to tie everything to a piece of hardware.

Unfortunately, the ONLY thing you can do is call Nintendo and try to get your licenses ported over to the new 3DS. ****ed up thing is, it is not guaranteed that they will do that for you.

I am sorry to hear about your loss. If you have the old 3DS's serial number (found on bottom of console and probably on game manuals that came with it) and can prove you were the owner of that 3DS to Nintendo customer service, you should be able to get it back.
I know the solution is far from ideal, and if Nintendo has at least half of a brain, they will look into making their services account-based, not console-based. After all, stories like these are not good for Nintendo's PR.

Just a quick update, I talked to a customer service rep at Nintendo today, after verifying some info he took care of everything. He said it would be about 1-2 days before I would be able to transfer my Nintendo ID but within a couple hours I received an email saying I could sign in with my info and have since redownloaded my titles. He was extremely nice and helpful as were you guys! Thanks everyone!
