Well much as I would refer to my self as an avid reader or history buff, I suppose I would consider myself a gamer.

You'd have to be really proud of purchasing and playing video games to call yourself a gamer I'd say.

I consider myself a "hardcore gamer". Maybe even Extreme hardcore. The reason is because saying gamer to me could just imply you play games, but casually, and it's just too vague. Most people who are just "gamers" only play madden or call of duty in my experience, and that's why I feel the need to be more specific.

No, mostly because of the negative connotation, but by definition I probably am one.

"Gamer" is too non-specific for me, and also I don't feel the need to make my gaming part of my identity, it's just a thing I do. I don't think it would be terribly innacurate for me to be lumped into that label though, I wouldn't feel a need to correct anyone. I like "Game Enthusiast", or "Player of Games". I think the "Gamer" label is more suited to those who's lives revolve around video games.

It would be easier to just say someone that plays video games or video games is a hobby.

Depends on the definition. I might not always refer to myself as a gamer, but I wouldn't feel offended if someone calls me one. And it's not that I don't refer to myself as a gamer because I don't like the term, it's more because I sometimes go through whole months rarely playing a game and that I play more for the story than for the gameplay.

I play no games competitively nor do I play that much so I wouldn't call myself a gamer.

My friends refer to me as a gamer, but I really only play my 3DS, so I don't really think so. Maybe if I were avidly playing on several consoles and the PC, then yeah, I might. I just like handhelds. Maybe handheld gamer would be more appropriate.

I do, mostly because gaming has been such an integral part of my life for 30 years. I wouldn't be who I am today without its presence. Also, I find gamer to be the most generally descriptive way to help others understand me and my hobbies.

I don't really see the word carrying any particular positive or negative connotations. It's a pretty casual, carefree word in my little corner of the world.

Well, video games are a big part of my life and I've been gaming for most of my life. I always keep up to date on gaming news, I purchase every new system/handheld Nintendo releases and I go on a few video game dedicated forums, so it's pretty obvious I'm an avid gamer to anyone... or just a nerd lol.

But would I refer to myself as a gamer? I dunno. I'm pretty much exclusive to Nintendo and I don't only play video games, I also collect a lot of Nintendo merchandise/collectables as part of my gaming hobby. By my own definition, I'd call myself a Nintendo enthusiast. I'd still probably refer to myself as a gamer if I were describing hobbies to someone since it's so simple to understand.

I can't seem to stand terms that end in "er'. Gamer, YouTuber, hater, etc.

Nope, at this point being a "gamer" isn't niche enough to matter anymore. I couldn't care less about being labeled.

"Gamer" definitely has some negative connotations associated with it. I have used the word in light conversation, but wouldn't post it in an about me piece. After #gamergate and other such garbage, I just can't be bothered with it.

Just because you call yourself a gamer doesn't mean you are a bad apple. No need to let the word be butchered because of a few bad apples, if you do, you let them win. Being a gamer is not a bad thing at all.

It's been a fairly even split so far.

IDK. I feel like the word "Gamer" was coined to describe people (mostly men tbh) who have a serious obsession with games- like it's the only thing they care about.

Like the word "otaku" in Japan, it's definitely not a word I'd use to describe myself.

The extremes in certain fan bases always bring down the rest, but I don't see it as a reason to avoid being part of it. Kinda like complete weeaboos vs fans of anime

Yeah, that's true.

Another comparison would be people who like supernatural, Dr. Who, and Sherlock. There's nothing wrong with liking those shows and being active in their fandoms but people who refer to themselves as "superwholock" are almost always annoying weirdos.

Otaku is kinda different as it implies an obsession with anime. I don't think gamer has that meaning in it, at least not anymore. I think gamer just has the "fan" part in its meaning, without the obsession and general negativeness otaku has.

I believe the word gamer just means "games enthusiast", someone who plays games as a hobby.

I don't play games competitively or anything, but I do spend a majority of my free time and money on games, so I guess I consider myself one. I wouldn't say I refer to myself as one, though. It's not like I go around telling people I'm a gamer. But if someone were to specifically ask me if I am one, I'd probably say yes.

I really do feel like the term can be used to describe anyone who enjoys playing games and spends a decent amount of time doing so, though.

The people I've met who refer to themselves unironically as a gamer tend to think that playing video games makes them a member of some kind of exclusive club when it really isn't.

I hate the "You're not a true gamer if ________" mentality.

Well, yes. I don't play a lot of games anymore.
At the moment I play about 2 hours a week.
But gaming has been a great part of my life for a long, long time.
So, yes. I'm a gamer.

I refer to myself as a gamer, a writer, a reader, a male, a son, a teacher, a husband, a traveler, a party-goer. Lots of things. I don't believe in monoism.

If you love games, and you feel like a gamer, you are one.

I tell people I am a casual gamer, since I play more casual games and not as often as I use to. Life has gotten a little busy.
