I picked mine up Friday evening, took it home and before charging the battery, I switched the memory card to the 32 gig size then charged the battery. About two hours later or so, it was fully charged.

I opened it up and turned it on for the first time and did some setups. The only part I did not set up was the Wi-Fi (yet.)

(A little off topic...)
I finally got around to putting in the game I bought the system for "Pinball Arcade" and found the image to be a bit on the dark side (even with the brightness turned up all the way and auto dimming turned off.) The image also seemed a little bit pixilated looking and I know that's from so much detail being crammed into the small, low resolution screen.

(Back on topic...)
As it turned out, I later found it this issue is title/software based. With a different game in the NEW 3DS, those issues (brightness and graininess) issues went away.

(slightly off topic again...)
When I set the camera to scroll a bit with the ball on Pinball Arcade, it was better because there was more screen space for the area it was showing. In that case, the 3D effect looked really good.

Pinball Arcade can be played with the NEW 3DS turned upside down. I think this is actually a better way to play it because the scoring is on top with the ball action below...just like in real life.

(On topic...)
What I found surprising was the face tracking did not do as good of a job when the NEW 3DS is turned upside down. It might had to do with the fact there was not a lot of light in the room (however I understand the new IR camera is suppose to take care of that,) or it could have been how it was holding the unit or the glasses I was wearing at the time.) Anyway, the tracking was much better when I had the unit upright.

Overall, the NEW 3DS does an excellent job at tracking for best 3D effect. As everyone has said in all the reviews I've read and seen, this is how the 3DS should have operated from the very start.

Till now, I have never had any Nintendo hand held gaming device and I'm blown away with the quality of the unit itself and the 3D effect.

As far as the 3D tacking goes while the unit is upside down, I'll be looking into that when I have a bit more time with the NEW 3DS. I'll try different things to see if I can improve on it such as being in a more lit room or holding the unit closer to my face. In time, I'll let you know what I find out. Besides that, the performance of the unit is performing as it was deigned.

Now that I think about it, when I'm holding the unit upside down, the camera is further away. Nintendo states the distance should be about 14 to 16" for best effect. So again, I'll be sure to look into that when I give the upside down playing mode another try.

The only thing that I would have to give a very low mark to is how that pen device is used to help remove the back cover. It messes up the plastic (deforms it) around the areas where it's being pulled on to pry it loose. Yes, I already had the screws loosened, the design should have allowed for a way for the head of the pen to get a better grasp onto those little half indented areas. Maybe one day, Nintendo will have personalized replacement backs so I can once again have those indented area looking new again.

Added after 2 Hours 39 minutes:

I'm liking this system more and more. I went back to try Pinball Arcade with the NEW 3DS in upside down and this time I made sure the head tracking camera was closer. With it closer, the 3D effect is fine.

Also, I was able to find settings within the game that made viewing the 3D effect much better. Finding the right in game camera angle on this game really made the difference when it came to seeing all the detail clearly.

Point and case, if you ever play with your system upside down, be sure to make sure the IR camera is at a distance where the head tracking can function properly.

wait did you get this game?

This is the darkest game i know. brightness really low. don't' think about the 3ds brightness because of that game, the new 3ds has excellent lighting and most games look better on it.

Yes, that's the game and yes, when compared to another 3DS game I've been playing, Pinball Arcade is dark.

That's ok though, I like Pinball Arcade enough to deal with it's low light output. It's the pinball play I really enjoy and the 3D is not bad either.

Upside down play is where I was a bit concerned with the NEW 3DS. As it turned out, I realize now I did not have the IR camera within a proper distance. So now with upside down mode, I make sure to have the IR camera closer to me.

I like the 3D head tracking, though it's not perfect. Without changing my head position it occasionally causes a flicker as if its trying to adjust for a new head position. Most of the time it works great though.

The sound seems louder than the old XL model, which is extremely nice because I felt that was a little too quiet. I could be wrong but it feels louder to me.

The new stylus position I think is worse, but this is a nit-pick. Changed Start and Select buttons also will take some getting used to.

The new Z shoulder buttons are in a terrible spot, even with big hands it would just be awkward to get to them. C-Stick is functional but that's about all I can say about it.

Metallic case is prone to finger prints, which kinda sucks, but at least it looks nice without them. I wonder if they can be replaced with aftermarket panels....

But really I need more time with it. 3DS always had a bunch of issues over time that bugged me, loose hinges, screen rubbing, ect. I'm hoping they don't happen but I feel Nintendo is pretty bad at fixing these problems so I won't hold my breath.

I'm glad to hear the volume appears to be better on the New XL. One reason I never bothered getting the original XL was due to the lower volume output relative to the original 3DS.

I was really surprised at how shiny it was, I was expecting it to look more like the old 3DS XL and have more of a flatter finish. I love it though. The only thing I can't figure out is how to use the second circle pad or ZL+ZR buttons for Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. I even went through all the settings, Smash Bros lets me use them, but Monster Hunter won't

well..i'm way older than most on here! :-) first time with a nintendo other than my Wii U which i most recently got. Always a ps4/xbox guys for years because of the sports games. But since i got a Wii u i have become fascinated with the simplicity and fun of nintendo games! Of course I would like Madden and a decent baseball game. I love Sim golf but Mario on 3ds xl is fun as hell!!! Pinball awaits me as soon as I can get a copy. I have the Zen version but I get bored with that. Mario Cart on Wii U is freaking great!! Not sure if it's worth getting it for the 3DS ? All in all i'm glad i got the unit!!!! I have alot of exploring to do!!

Fantastic, Tried playing Majora's Mask on my original Flame Red 3DS, and man the C-Stick makes a world of difference!

I need more time with it too. This is just to find the most comfortable position to be optimal distance from the screen while in a chair, couch or where ever I'm sitting. I'm not that tall of a person, however I still need to make sure my head is tilted down to keep the screen at a distance of 14 to 16". The way I position myself while using the NEW 3DS is pretty much the same as when I'm reading a book.

I've kept the Styrofoam that came with the unit (to protect the screen during shipping) and put it back between the two screens when I close the NEW 3DS. I'm not taking a chance on having the screen get scratched on it's own when the case gets closed. There's talk about that happening on the internet, then there are those who have never heard of such a thing (Nintendo help desk for one) and others at one game shop said that problem was only with the original units.

Since I can't get a straight answer, I'm keeping the Styrofoam between the two screens when I close the unit.

Oh and another thing, I found I never need to use the little pen as my finger AND buttons on the NEW 3DS works just fine for moving around and selecting options on the bottom screen.

I have a unfortunate update. When I downloaded the Youtube app for my NEW 3DS XL, the 3D function stopped working as far was 3D Youtube videos are concerned. Before the Youtube app was downloaded, I was fully enjoying watching 3D movie trailers with the Youtube app that came with my NEW 3DS XL and they looked great!

You might ask why I would have downloaded the Youtube app when my New 3DS XL already had one. The answer is simple, to get to the Youtube app on the NEW 3DS without having to go deep into the menu system to launch the Youtube app that came with the NEW 3DS. With the downloading of the free Youtube app, the icon for Youtube is now easily accessible on the home menu. Much easier to reach and launch. Of course, I had no idea downloading the Youtube app would break the functionality of the stereoscopic display of 3D Youtube videos.

I suspect once the download for the Youtube app updated in the NEW 3DS system, the 3D function was set back to an older version of the Youtube app (that did not stereoscopically display 3D videos) making my NEW 3DS not capable of displaying 3D videos anymore.

I contacted Nintendo about this and all they did was take the information down and I was told there would be no follow up. Maybe someday there will be an update to the Youtube app, but till then my NEW 3DS XL will not display 3D Youtube videos stereoscopically.

There are two things I can add to this.

1. So far, no one at Nintendo was able to suggest anything such as reformatting my memory card. Or if in fact if formatting the card would make any difference or not.

2. I could not get an answer if there is internal memory within the 3DS itself (other than of course the memory card that pulls out.)

3. If there was a way or not to get the system back to it's original state.

Of course, this situation makes me want to swap my NEW 3DS XL for another NEW 3DS XL. I could very easily reformat my micro SD card and start all over again if that would help, but I'm not getting an answer about that from Nintendo. I do understand the unit comes with a one year warranty, though I do not know if the warranty covers software screw-ups.

The only thing I can add to this conversation is when I select a 3D Youtube video to watch, I don't even get video. I only get a speaker symbol with only the audio working. Of course that leads me to another couple questions.

1. Am I getting that symbol because of a feature I accidently selected? If so, maybe deselecting something will get the 3D feature working again for 3D Youtube videos.

2. If the internet signal is weak, would that cause the Youtube app to only play back audio without video?

Other than the issues with the Youtube app, the 3D effect works fine in the games.

Update; I looked at the release date of the Youtube app from the Nintendo e-shop, Nov 2013.

it's a beautiful system, but the buttons feel kinda dry and chalk like to me, might be because it's brand new.

c-stick so far is kinda uncomfortable. i hope it starts to feel better but again it may be because it's new.

despite what a lot of people have told me, the screen does make everything look kinda stretched out and details dont look as good compared to smaller screen. i have a good eye for detail and tend to be critical about what i see so that's probably just my issue

sound is definitely better than xl, so are download speeds.

I hate hate hate how you have to unscrew the back to change the sd. i feel like im gonna break the system or bend the case.

3d tracking is so much better

havent used the ZR/L buttons yet, dont know when i'll ever have to

OVERALL: I've been having a lot of trouble and annoyances getting my N3ds set up. But as far as style and playability go, I like the looks better than old 3ds xl and c-stick will be very useful later

I noticed yesterday the C-stick worked on the Youtube app. It helps control the speed of the playback...not that I would use it for that. The point is, I found the control of the C-stick to be comfortable. The reason, I was very surprised to discover how little pressure is needed to control the C-stick.

I can understand it looking more grainy, simply because of the low resolution and bigger screen when compared to looking to the screen size on the regular 3DS, but kind of stretched?

Is the ratio of the screen different than the ratio of the screen on the regular 3DS? If the ratio is the same, there should be no difference in image geometry.

What kind of trouble?

The issue I'm having with the 3D not working on 3D Youtube videos is as far as I know, still there. Last night I deleted the Youtube app I downloaded yesterday so I hope maybe that will take care of the problem. However I won't have a chance to test it out till I get a chance to get to a local hot spot to test it out. That will be later today and of course, I'll write back onto this forum how it went.

Stretched as in expanded, so like grainy like you said.

The trouble i've been having are just personal annoyances like i was having trouble transferring to a new sd and the screws on the back cover and whatnot

I love it. Definately my favourite handheld of all time, even surpassing my long time favourite GameBoy Advance SP.

The 3D tracking is great and 3D seems much cleaner and deeper in general. The screens are brighter and everything looks nicer.

The c-stick works perfectly in MH4U but not that well in Ironfall so I guess it's up to the developer if it used properly. The extra shoulder buttons seem unnececary but who knows?

The battery lasts about an hour more so that's cool although I wish it could last even longer.

As for the looks, for some reason the New 3DS (not the XL) seems so elegant in my eyes. It's just beautiful.

I also transferred all my data from my old 3DS to my new one EXACTLY the way they were, with folders and everything, which was neat.

Overall the system feels good in the hands and is a nice upgrade from the 3DS, not as big as the DSi was for the DS but still good enough. I'm still not sure it's worth the buy if you already have a 3DS. Mine had 2 big scratches on the screen and its R and B buttons got broken (damn you MH3U and KI:U) so I decided to upgrade.

This is rather annoying. I've come to realize the blue New 3DS XL system I purchased at launch last year (it launched in Australia November 21, 2014) was faulty.

I recently got the Majora's Mask New 3DS XL and I've found the C-stick is way more responsive and easier to use. The C-stick requires a lot more force on my blue system and this whole time I thought that was normal.

Also on my blue system, the 3D face tracking was a bit glitchy and I just assumed that the bad lighting in my room or something was affecting it. The 3D face tracking is 100% perfect on my Majora's Mask system.

Just ordered 2 New 3DS's for me and my daughter. They should be here by the end of the week. I can't wait. She left her old Pink 3DS on the couch under a blanket and it ended up being sat on and detached the upper screen. We managed to transfer her profile over to my old original black 3DS but she misses the bigger screen. So, I figured I may as well get her the New 3DS and if she's getting an upgrade, then so am I lol. At least now I can put my Mario and Luigi Dream Team LE 3DS XL back up before it starts to get wear signs on it and hurt its cosmetic collectibility. As for the old black OG 3DS, I will probably just give it away to someone who needs it.

So far, so good. great system. All my games play great and look even better. Now I'd say the 3DS is as fun to play as my VITA.

This.
I got an Ambassador New 3DS, and until my girlfriend got a New 3DS XL, I didn't realize how broken mine was. If I want to look down, I have to use an unholy amount of force.
A good example of how broken it is: On the 3DS Home Screen, pressing Up or Down on the C-Stick should scroll your cursor on a loop, highlighting your games. On mine, it loops with an Up press, but will move only once down, if I'm lucky.
I emailed Nintendo about this 3 days ago, with no reply. I also do not have another New 3DS to system transfer to incase I have to send it to Nintendo. (You cannot system transfer back to an 'old' 3DS)

Bit bummed out by this as the 3DS family are my favourite consoles of all time.

Love it so far. Got a red one at Gamestop that we preordered, and then I managed to snag a Majora's Mask edition at Target the morning of launch. Love the new 3D effect, Monster Hunter is way more fun on it!

I picked one up recently as well. The red model.

I think it's great. I play my 3DS often and the improved 3D visuals of the new model is what definitely sold me on it.

The IPS screen is a big upgrade over the other units ( new XL only ). I compared with my best friends regular XL and the new XL is night and day better looking ( more vibrant colors ). I wanted the normal sized new 3DS but now I'm not so sure ( since its not IPS ).

Ever since I got the original 3DS XL, I don't ever want to go back to a smaller screen size.

Sure it's more "portable" but everything feels so cramped after playing on the XL edition.

I do understand the appeal to the XL, but I like to carry my 3DS with me everywhere and it just is rather difficult with an XL.

when nintendo announced the new 3DS model, I had the original blue/black 3DS xl sitting around waiting for MH4U to come out, I deleted everything right away and sold it, lost like 3-4 digital games I got from the E shop sales, however I didn't preorder the new one right away as I don't support preordering stuff no matter what the bonus is (in case there is a bonus). I waited for the new one to come out first, wanted to try the demo unit and see the people who bought it and their opinion about it, for 2 weeks I have been checking the stores nearby to see if they got the black one in stock as they were out of stock everywhere I go, they had the red one all the time. finally last week I gave up, went and picked the red one from walmart, picked MH4U and fantasy life (wanted to give fantasy life a try). and man do I regret selling my original 3ds xl?, oooooo no, I'm glad I sold it back in the time for a bit more than the amount of money game stop offered for the trade. do I regret not pre ordering one of the limited edition or just the black 3DS xl? ( I really wanted the black one at that time as it looked nice and still look nice) and again no I don't regret skipping on pre ordering it because it led me to pick up the red one and that red colored 3DS XL is just sexy :P I'm glad I waited all this time, if I didn't wait all this time I could have ended up with different one without having the chance to check the red colored one. and that MH4U game is just great :P spending all my free time playing it. excuse me now, that monster won't hunt itself :P

What's wrong with pre-ordering with companies that have a great track record? It guarantees you a console in case of shortages.

I myself was on the fence about upgrading - but I got one. Glad I did - would have preordered if I knew how great it was.

Third time's the charm - love the new 3DS.

my reason for not pre-ordering games is that many games get a big hype, so people go out and pre-order, then when the game come out, it turns out the game suck and/or Beta unfinished game and people feel they got scammed and start to cry about it. Next hype, same people go pre-order another game and same thing happen and repeat itself. same people keep pre-ordring and keep getting scammed and keep crying about it, and this encourage gaming companies to make bad games where people pay for those games even without knowing what they are buying.

Also I don't want to forget to mention the pre-ordering DLC or bonus you get from pre-ordering some games. the company cut some stuff from the original game to make it a pre-order only DLC or bonus, and it keep getting worse.

yea sorry I don't support scam like that. that's why I don't own any "next gen" gaming system yet as so far from what I saw only few are good games while the others are a big hype for a fail games, and this seem to happen with the next gen systems and many pc games, also that pay to play online on the next scammy gen gaming system is just a big scam lol yea no thanks.

Nintendo is my last hope in video games, so far I bought many games for my 3ds, some do have DLC and I did support them because with the 3DS games I bought so far I got finished games that have long gameplay and a nice stories and worth the money I spent on them, even thou I have a good faith in nintendo I will still not support any pre-ordering from them, I will wait to see the full reviews for those games and make sure the game worth the money I'm spending on, I won't die if I waited for a month or two before buying that new game.

now for pre-ordering console, it's basically the same reason, look at how many people pre-ordered the PS4 and how many of them were not happy with that bad units they got, and I know a guy who pre-ordered his ps4, he had to wait for a long time and he had to do many things to finally be able to play his ps4, while at the same time another guy who didn't pre-order it was able to play on his ps4 before the dude who pre-ordered it (even thou the guy got his pre-order way earlier). Also I got scammed one time from sony for trusting their word on the PS Vita when it came out, not sure if they had pre-orders on it or not, but I got it day 1 and turned out the system was bad, I liked the few games it had but still not many games on it and now it's just a remote controller for the ps4, from now on, I will make sure it won't happen again no matter who the company is. I will make sure I'm waiting for 1-2 or even more months before going out and buying stuff blindly, I will make sure I'm getting something well worth the money I spent on.

srry for the long out of topic post, just wanted to give my opinion about pre-ordering stuff

I've always owned launch systems and I've yet to have any bad experiences, and this is from PS1 . I also never preorder bad games, I guess I'm pretty good at spotting a lemon .

People can choose to preorder what they want even if you dont want to personally and it's too bad you got scammed but most of the time those things dont happen.

I know, I don't have any right to tell others to preorder or not, everyone have their own opinion. I was just giving my opinion and reason for not preordering stuff. However I do watch many reviews of the new games and in in a good amount of these review videos in the comments I see many people share same opinion as me. but seeing many people have same as my opinion tells me I'm not the only one who don't support preordering stuff.

I always buy Nintendo's handhelds and consoles as soon as they release because it's Nintendo, what's not to like? I've been preordering/buying on release dates for years and I've only had one unfortunate experience. Just one and I don't put the blame for that on the fact I bought it on the release date.

My blue New 3DS XL had an issue with the C-stick and face-tracking 3D, but like I said above, I don't blame that on being bought on the release date. Even if you don't preorder a console/handheld, there's still a slight chance you'll end up with a defective system.

As for games, I only preorder/buy on release games I KNOW I'm going to enjoy or I decided I liked it after playing a demo. There have been a small few I didn't like as much as I wanted to, but they still weren't bad games. I'm usually always satisfied with my gaming purchases.

DLC can be a good thing, like the Mario Kart 8 DLC packs for an example. It's a lot of extra content and keeps the game fun for people who frequently play.

Think what you like about preordering, but I'm not going to stop over only one bad experience. I wanna enjoy new games and systems when they come out, that's part of the fun!

Yea I know there are some that do, but still in general sometime people might sort of just assume that companies do stuff on purpose all for money but sometimes they have other reason for what they do. I understand your opinion, just that a lot of the time companies might get criticized a little unfair.

Well, so far, from only using it for about an hour:

1. Definitely a little speedier than OG
2. The circle pad is a bit too slippery for my taste
3. The C-Stick is... different, but usable
4. The 3D is finally usable!
5. Gonna need a grip, don't know if I want to order the one that is already available but ships from China.

Sadly, after getting my PSVITA my 3DS spent months in the closet.

Now I like my New 3DS just as much as the PS VITA and thanks to my new game - Persona Q play it as much.

I'm lovin' my new 3DS.

The N3DS is amazing. I loved the 3DS and 3DSXL and thought it couldn't get any better, but it did.

First of all the build quality is even better than the 3DSXL. The system feels solid.
The colour change of the ABXY buttons is really nice. Nostalgia!

I like the covers more than I thought. The Wood Mario cover is amazing, it feels like you are playing a cigar case ^_^. My ambasador system also came with a white smash bros cover and a limited Nintendo cover. I though I had enough covers, but picked up the Majoras Mask cover last week.

The system is much faster than the 3DS. Downloading is quick and booting appilcations is speedier. Very nice.

The addition of shoulder buttons ZL and ZR took a little getting used to. In MGSII the controls can't be altered and I have fire on the ZR button and reload on the R (or something like that) which is awkward because I have to reach for the button I primarily use.
Then there is the C-Stick, which I called 'The ****' from day one. It resembles the nubs IBM used on their ThinkPads. I had one on my old Compaq notebook and I hated the thing.
On the N3DS is shines however. It works great.

Overall I'm liking the N3DS so much I'm actually considering selling my 3DS and 3DSXL.
It's not my habit to sell systems, but I know they will end up eating dust in the closet.

The standard size is confirmed to have IPS as well.

The thread is about your experience with the New 3DS. If you have nothing of substance to say, don't post.
