Default Can't use Network ID. Already linked to another system?

Hey folks. I traded in my 3ds about a month a go at gamestop for credit towards the new 3ds. I waited as they formatted it and what not and received my credit after. Right now I'm trying to link my network ID on my new 3ds, but it says...

"This Nintendo Network ID has already been linked to another system in the Nintendo 3DS family. Please select a different Nintendo Network ID and try again."

I don't see what other system they could be talking about, as that 3ds is the only 3ds (besides a japanese one I never linked anything to) that I've owned.

I tried looking online but so far I keep ending up at the official Nintendo page pretty much just giving lip service with now actual specific help to my problem. Think Windows trouble shooting for pretty much anything.

Want to link my ID so I can get my MH DLC and what not. Plus, I just want my ID linked in general. Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance!!

A basic system format does not unlink the NNID or erase your eShop history, so your NNID is still linked to the 3DS you traded in. You'll have to contact Nintendo directly for help resolving this, if possible.

Thank you for the prompt response, Tekka. Much appreciated.

I may sound like I'm whining but.... Wow.. I'm honestly shocked this is turning out to be an actual problem. Especially since they've just released a newer version, and are notorious for doing so when it comes to handhelds. Think it's utterly ridiculous that they'd think most people would hold on to their old system while buying a new one (read online you can transfer it if you have both systems). Bought a bunch of downloadable games on that system... I know Nintendo is stubborn in weird ways when it comes to change (yet completely not when it comes to other things), but this is ridonkadonk.

Anyway, I'll contact them and find out how to clear this idiocy up. Just read online that someone did the same and it was fixed within a couple days. Goodness, it's 2015!!

You're quite justified. The NNID system sucks, no doubt. It's the worst part of their online infrastructure and just happens to be the core of it too.
