Exclamation Reasons for burn-in on 3DS touchscreen?

A few days ago, after playing my newly purchased Majora's Mask remake on my 3DS for the first time, I noticed that the touchscreen had developed burn-in at the top-right edge. I only noticed this after about an hour of gameplay, as when I was about to turn the system off, the colour of the power-down screen made the mark more obvious. It was quite dark initially and seemed to follow the shape of a menu button that had been displayed on the screen whilst the game was running. It did fade after a few hours, but the burn-in has reoccurred every time I have played the game since, and running any other game now appears to exacerbate the problem.

I've had my 3DS since 2011 and have never had any real issues with the touchscreen or any other part of the system until now. I originally assumed that my system was just reaching the end of its lifespan, but when I ran the game for a short time on my girlfriend's 3DS (which is a newer model) a similar - though much less severe - burn mark appeared in the exact same place. Because of this and the fact that the burn mark resembles UI from the game I was playing when the problem first occurred, I'm unsure as to whether this is an issue caused by the system or the game.

The only thing I can think of that could indicate an issue with my touchscreen prior to the burn-in is a slight clicking sound that can be heard when the screen is tapped on the left side, as though something is slightly loose - but this is the opposite side from where the burn-in has developed. I've attached an image of my touchscreen with the mark circled so you can get a better idea of what it looks like. (This is my first time posting here, so feel free to let me know if there's a better way to share the picture).

Has anyone else experienced the same problem, either after playing the Majora's Mask remake or just in general? And does anyone know where this problem is likely to have stemmed from? Any advice is appreciated!
