So, I finally got in mine and my daughters New 3DS's, one red and one black, and was wondering how difficult it might be to swap the front and back plates on them to give a little colour contrast. The back plate is pretty straight forward but the front I'm not sure of. I wouldn't mind swapping buttons too but don't think I want to tackle the internals just to get to them. Not sure if anyone has taken the front plate off the New XL or not. Just figured I'd ask before getting into it.
Added after 7 Hours 20 minutes: So, I can't figure out how to remove the top plate. Removed the screws around the screen but it didn't seem to loosen it. There were no screws under the top two bumpers, and no matter where I tried to pry from, it was a no go. To bad too, just trading the bottom plates alone looks pretty good on both systems and is how I'm leaving both of them for now. Would've been awesome if I could've figured out the top. Assuming you meant you and your daughter both got New 3DS XLs? I'm sure you're aware of it but you're not meant to be able to take the top faceplate off.
As you've noticed though, the backs come off fairly easily, (and is required if you want to change your Micro SD card) and in theory, they could release 'back plates' for XLs, or even print your own with a 3D printer. For now, without voiding your warranty, there is no way of changing the top plate of a New 3DS XL. |

I tried to slide it off first but it wouldn't budge. I then gently tried prying it off at a couple spots but only managed to lightly scuff the plastic ever so slightly here and there. However they have it attatched, I'm not going to figure it out. I'll probably just put some skins on it and be done with it until someone makes good quality replacement shells for them. Then I can pry to my hearts content without worrying about damaging because I'll be replacing it.
