Default Nintendo eshop vs boxed version

Hi everyone, i've been an avid gamer for a long time now but have never owned a 3ds.

I have a question about buying games.

I hear you can buy games on the eshop or buy the boxed version from the shop.

Is this true? For my specific scenario I want to purchase a new 3ds and The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D.

Can i buy the 3ds alone and then purchase that game off the estore? or do i need to buy the physical boxed version. Also are there any differences? e.g will buying off the eshop take up more of the hardrive space on the 3ds than if i purchased the boxed version?.

Thank you

1. it doesnt matter whether you buy the download or physical version, once u set ur 3ds up and get onto eshop u can download the game if thats what u want to do, however if u get a limited edition (like the majoras mask special edition 3ds) you get a copy of the game already downloaded on ur 3ds i think

2. yeah it will take up memory space, and yeah it will be more bc on a physical version majority of the memory is saved onto the game cartridge, downloads have no cartridge to keep that on...

Actually, the Majora's Mask 3DS doesn't come with the game.

Not really an issue for the special edition since it was the same price as the standard n3ds XL.

Any LE's are normally priced higher (like $30), MM edition was the same price.

that makes sense, but why didnt nintendo bundle the two together and add an extra ?/$30 like regular LE?

Not sure. I think SMASH LE was the same way. They probably know they will sell the game at full price digital or physical either way.

Yeah, I thought it was pretty dumb since the Monster Hunter one actually comes with the game.

Not that it matter since mostly scalpers bought all of them up anyway. Nintendo and their limited quantity runs of crap. I mean I understand not wanting to spend too much money and risk making too many of them and having them sit on the shelf, but this is ridiculous. Also, all I ever see are red new 3DS's, so it looks like they didn't make enough black ones either. I mean, do they really think people want red hardware?

Actually Majora's Mask 3D is only preinstalled on the European LE system. The North American and Australian LE systems don't have it preinstalled for some odd reason.

It says it's preinstalled on the European box.

There are plenty of the black New 3DS's available around here. I'm guessing they sell more of the red ones because a lot of people would rather have a system in a colour other than black and the red one is pretty much it. If I hold mine and my daughters New 3DS's side by side and compare, the red one definitely pops out more. I figure it's similar to when the original 3DS came out. There were plenty of both Black and Aqua coloured systems available but I saw A LOT more of the Aqua ones being toted around town when I was out and about.

I'm a cartridge guy all the way. I play the game and then often lend it to someone. And unless you have a really big SD card they take up considerable space. I want to play a game and then put it back in the box. Of the 38 or so 3DS game cartridges I've bought I can only think of one that I will play indefinitely -- Luigi's Mansion for the online mode -- and even there I'm reluctant to reserve 6,748 blocks on my SD card for it. My most recent 3DS console purchase was the Disney Magical World special edition which didn't come with the game, but I already owned the game (I had to replace my red XL after breaking the circle pad on Smash Bros.).
