Default What's your opinion on remakes?

What makes a remake good or bad to you?

When would you play a remake over the original game? Or vice versa?

A remake should add features that accentuate the positives of the original game, and make it easier to enjoy. Things like adding a map in Metroid Zero Mission or the revamped Bomber's Notebook in Majora's Mask 3D are great additions that highlight what makes the original game special. Additional content I'm 50/50 on. It often feels a bit tacked on, like the new quests in Chrono Trigger DS. Visual upgrades are certainly to be expected in a remake, though remade/enhanced visuals alone aren't really enough to sell me.

Monkey Island 2 and Zelda: Wind Waker are both great examples on what I'd want in a remake

From Monkey Island 2, we have improved visuals, developer commentaries, the inclusion of voice acting, and the ability to play the "original" version (with bonus points for being able to add the new voice acting to the original graphics if you want to).

From Wind Waker, we see lots of improvement in the gameplay aspects with things such as better sailing, the inclusion of a hard mode, a less tedious triforce, etc which overall made Wind Waker HD a better game than the original did.

Essentially I consider it a good remake if the game is old enough to justify a remake and the remake is better than the original/provides some reason for old players to buy it.
Always buy the game first to see if you will enjoy the demo.

I don't think I've ever played a bad remake.

My favorites though are Pokemon SoulSilver, REmake, Dragon Quest V and Final Fantasy IV. All have visual upgrades that don't look awful, and add new elements while also retaining what made the game worth replaying in the first place.

Pokemon HGSS was perfect.

Thumbs up

Right now I'm playing "Grim Fandango" on my PSVITA and it is a really good remake.

Two things I like are better graphics and the improved playability this game has over the original.

I love remakes or HD remasters for a bunch of reasons.

A) I love replaying good games.

B) I love sharing my favorite games with others, making a game seem fresh helps get new people interested. This will hopefully also work out for my son and daughter who I'd love to share my favorite games with eventually.

C) Some games feel like they were meant to be played this way. Specifically Wind Waker HD. For the longest time I refused to play this game, even being a huge Zelda fan, because I couldn't get over the graphics and art direction of the game. After the game got the HD treatment it ended up all making sense to me, and I actually now think it's the best art style and graphics the series has out so far. On gamecube it just never looked right to me.

D) There are countless games I've actually not played yet, that I can now experience in an to date form myself. I just bought Grim Fandango, and FFX/X2 HD for example. Even MM and OoT! I have never played these before. Many many other games that are remade that I will be picking up in the future as well.

A remake that sticks true to the original for the most part while adding a good amount of bonus features. I do love that remakes allow people who haven't played the original(s)/ hard to find classic game(s) the chance to play them.

100% agree.

I also don't like when a remake is missing something essential from the original game.

HD remasters are usually very good because old games don't look well on modern big screens.
