http://www.nintendo.co.jp/corporate/...317/index.html

In the middle of their DeNA smart device collaboration, Nintendo announced their next console is underway to make sure people still know they plan to stay in the dedicated game console business.

Things we know:

-Dedicated game console

-Will use Nintendo's new account system

-Very early in dev stages

-More details next year

Thoughts on the matter?

This is kinda what I was expecting to happen since last year. I'm surprised to see all this announced out of the blue and all, but I do like that this is finally happening.

No promises this will turn out good, but there's potential for this to be great.

I don't know if it's a "Wii U successor" at this point - Just that it's a "dedicated gaming console."

This is the end of Nintendo. It's all over.

Why over? Could be expanding more than just a gaming console like Sony and Microsoft.

I meant to post that in the other thread.

At this point, I don't care about the NX, but I do care, that it seems like Nintendo may provide a unified account system now. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

The biggest news here is that we're getting a proper unified account system.

Another console was pretty much a no brainer.

I don't like it for a few reasons.

Regardless if its a console or a portable I think that 3DS is in its prime NOW, especially with the more powerful superior NEW 3DS. I can't imagine them wanting to release a new portable after giving the 3DS more staying power, and quite honestly I wouldn't be ready to make a switch as I am still enjoying my 3DS.

If it's the Wii U replacement, I'm also disappointed. I know the Wii U has been a pretty big failure but the system itself is great, I feel like they could have just done more to make it important. There comes a point where graphics look good enough that it really doesn't matter that much for console, and I think Wii U was at that point. I had to sell my Wii U awhile back but I was really looking forward to the new Zelda Wii U and hoping that Wii U had some more promise beyond that, but a new console would NOT reassure me on buying one again. I'm guessing it's a new console, and I guess that means I'll probably end up waiting for more Wii U price cuts before ever getting one.

I'm hoping they add the unified account to everything... it's CRAZY that it's not already.

Okay now that I got a moment to sit down, I feel like speculating. Since Nintendo actually goes through the effort to make sure their next generation console is at least backwards compatible with the last, I'm assuming this one will be backwards compatible with the WiiU. On that assumption, I'm going to speculate that the next system will be gamepad compatible. Whether it be the main control scheme or just an option, I think the gamepad will be sticking around. I mean, it's an expensive piece of ****ery.

So that brings me to my next speculation piece. At some point before the release of NX, I think gamepads are going to go retail. Maybe even a "NEW" gamepad with better performance capabilities.

They said the NX is still in its early development stages it won't be ready until 2017 at the earliest which would be 5 years after the release of the Wii U which is about average console life.

They just "announced" it to dispel rumors about them leaving the console business.

Those are all pretty sound predictions. I agree.

Maybe I'm spoiled by Playstation but I'm used to damn near 10 year life cycles. PS3 launched in 2006 right before the Wii and it's still getting some AAA releases. Same went for all Playstation Generations.

I think the point still remains, this doesn't fill me with the confidence to buy the Wii U anymore, since I feel that 5 years is a bit too short. I think the fact that Nintendo consoles only last 5 years is kind of a problem for them. Playstation is just a more lasting investment, even if its a little bit more expensive up front.

PS1 - 1995
PS2 - 2000
PS3 - 2006
PS4 - 2013

NES - 1985
SNES - 1991
N64 - 1996
Gamecube - 2001
Wii - 2006
Wii U - 2012

10 years is definitely an exaggeration. 5-6 is more typical. Also, if Nintendo continues their current trend of offering backwards compatibility it would be a no brainer to buy an NX over a Wii U anyway.

My point is more about the support for nearly 10 years, not just the next hardware comes out. Other consoles can get away with longer lives and more support because they came out of the box more powerful with more staying power. In my opinion Nintendo consoles quickly die as soon as the next hardware generation comes out, but with Sony consoles you get years worth of quality titles still hitting the system years after the next console comes out. A huge factor in this also has to do with 3rd party ports, something Nintendo rarely gets, so it makes sense they ditch old hardware since they make the bulk of the games that sell. This is why I specifically mentioned AAA titles.

As for NX over Wii U, unless it plays Wii games I would still just hold off for a long time, because I wanted the Wii U for the BC too. I know I'll get a Wii U again, but it's just now not a priority based off Nintendo's history. I can wait for another price drop or 2.

Like Kin said, Iwata only mentioned this to make sure no one thought Nintendo is trying to ease itself out of hardware with the smartphone stuff. I think observations about Nintendo's interest in there current hardware is premature given that. It was just announced to prove a point.

Kinda hope its one unified platform. managing 2 different systems with radically different specs, OS, architecture, API, tools, engine support, etc doesn't seem like its going to work anymore.

Thumbs up

I myself upgrade to a new system every six years. It is nice that Sony supports for 10 years - actually amazing.

I know that the PSP got games for a full tens years and so did the PS2 and the PS3 will also.

But for me - as long as I got a good collection - like I do with my 3DS I'm good to go.

Iwata and Nintendo stated work was in place to unify OS/architecture so that it would be much easier to develop across their own hardware. He also mentioned the number of hardware devices many increase, not decrease.

I don't think it will come out till 2017 at the earliest. It maybe similar to a ps4 - vita with remote play - I am guessing but it could be a great next generation system with some cross-play and the games easy to port from one to another.

Anyway - most companies start developing systems years before they release them.
