i have the same problem but with my L button and mine happened like a year ago maybe?
i think mine was due to mario kart 7, pretty sure it was after i was using the golden mushroom and was drifting around a corner at the same time i havent fixed it but i dont have many games where it makes too much of an issue, just waiting to get my hands on a new 3ds

Have you tried using a can of compressed air on the R button? From what I have read on various forums, that maybe a temporary fix.
For a more permanent solution - you may have to send your system into Nintendo to get it repaired. Or buy another 3DS say like the N3DS to replace your old one. |

Compressed air might help, but just like blowing on the corner of the 3DS is only a temporary fix.
If the button doesn't work anymore, or it's irrisponsive at times it's most likely worn down. There are two options: 1- return the 3DS if it's still under warranty 2- order a new set of shoulder buttons (with cable attached) and replace the button yourself Okay, there is a third option; have a 3rd party replace the button but it's expensive. And since it's so easy to do yourself I'd go for option 2.

It is a design flaw of the original 3DS. Your choices are to live with it or get a new one, sadly :/
Compressed air works for a while. The metal connectors in your 3DS build up dust/corrosion.
