Default R button not working

So I've owned this original 3DS since last August and although it was pre-owned it was refurbished to be 'like new'.

I haven't had any trouble with from the time I bought it up until yesterday when the R button stopped working properly. I'll be playing Smash 4 and press it to grab but the grabs won't come through consistently. Sometimes it will work but for the most part, it does not.

I play a lot of Smash so could this be due to wear and tear? Has this happened to anyone else and were you able to fix it? Any input will be appreciated

i have the same problem but with my L button and mine happened like a year ago maybe?
i think mine was due to mario kart 7, pretty sure it was after i was using the golden mushroom and was drifting around a corner at the same time
i havent fixed it but i dont have many games where it makes too much of an issue, just waiting to get my hands on a new 3ds

Have you tried using a can of compressed air on the R button? From what I have read on various forums, that maybe a temporary fix.

For a more permanent solution - you may have to send your system into Nintendo to get it repaired. Or buy another 3DS say like the N3DS to replace your old one.

Compressed air might help, but just like blowing on the corner of the 3DS is only a temporary fix.
If the button doesn't work anymore, or it's irrisponsive at times it's most likely worn down.

There are two options:
1- return the 3DS if it's still under warranty
2- order a new set of shoulder buttons (with cable attached) and replace the button yourself
Okay, there is a third option; have a 3rd party replace the button but it's expensive. And since it's so easy to do yourself I'd go for option 2.

It is a design flaw of the original 3DS. Your choices are to live with it or get a new one, sadly :/

Compressed air works for a while. The metal connectors in your 3DS build up dust/corrosion.

Ahh I see. I'll give a couple of your recommendations a go and see how it goes. I'll likely end up getting a new one to avoid the hassle though.

Thank you all very much!

If you do replace your system, I'd recommend getting a N3DS. As a recent owner of one, its definitely a major improvement over the old models.
