Default "New" 3DS TFT screen

So, since buying the New 3DS for myself, my daughter, and my wife I've been wondering if any of them were a TN panel instead of an IPS panel. I know color and viewing angles on IPS displays are much nicer but don't receive the same refresh rates. All three New 3DS's had great color and viewing angles so I suspected that they were all IPS and as it turns out, I was right. I know this because I recently purchased another as a gift for one of our friends son for his birthday. I was asked by our friend if I could set it up before giving it to him since she is not very tech savvy and just wanted him to turn it on and go. After charging it up, I turned it on and immediately noticed something different in the screen. I thought it might be possible that I was just not used to the initial screen settings that come stock. After finally getting through the set up I set brightness to max and turned off auto brightness and power saving. It was immediately evident that this New 3DS was equipped with a TN screen. Colors wash out and change when the screen is tilted 45? and color reproduction is just a bit off with more of a "warm" appearance when set side by side with any of our other New 3DS's. I figured, its not all bad. Without another 3DS with IPS screen sitting right next to it, you won't really see the difference. Plus I figured TN screens have higher response times which should help aid the new head tracking 3D feature of the New 3DS......... I was horribly wrong. Any advantages the TN has with refresh rates is immediately wiped away the moment you start to tilt the screen and one eye begins seeing a washed out image while the other is seeing the right colors still. It makes for a odd at best immage whether the 3D is preserved or not. But then there was another problem. Because one eye is seeing slightly different color representation it gives a slight "ghosting" effect to anything on the outside half of the screen when tilted in 3D. The TN screens should never have been used. I actually feel bad that the 3DS I'm giving our friends son does not have an IPS screen. I feel as though we're giving him an inferior product

All of that said, had Nintendo never even used the IPS screen on the New 3DS and had only used TN screens, I'm not sure I would care as much. In real world use, the negatives I pointed out will most likely go unnoticed to the kid receiving this 3DS since he has nothing to compare to and wouldn't know anyway.

Yeah I heard about this too. Luckily mine has an IPS screen or else I would've been pissed.

If you bought it recently, I guess you could get a refund? At least over here there's a 14 day return policy even if it's not technically faulty.

I would've maybe tried to exchange it but I bought it on-line and just don't have time to wait. Either way, the kid I got it for is turning 6 on the 3rd of this month and I don't think he will care. Heck, he probably won't even use it with 3D turned on. Ive seen quite a bit of videos showing that kids under the age of 8 don't like the 3D on paralaxing screens due to their eyes or at least how their brains process the 3D image. The image basically hurts their eyes and is hard to watch. In some cases, children said the image appeared to vibrate. My daughter is turning 7 shortly and got her 3DS for her 5th birthday and still doesn't like the 3D, even on the "New" 3DS, which I thought may work better for her since the 3D effect was easier on the eyes.

At the end of the day, he will be beside himself excited to receive it since his mom said he'd been wanting one since Christmas and she just don't have the means to afford one being a single mom who has still yet to receive ANY child support from a dead beat father after getting divorced 4 years ago. I feel every growing kid needs their video games and was more than happy to help out :-)
