Default Snail presents: A Review

So for my final AP English essay I had to write a review. I chose to review MKX. Here it is.

Finish Him!
The year is 1992. Arcades are booming and a new cabinet is in town: the controversial Mortal Kombat. When the original Mortal Kombat released it sparked huge controversy. The game contained ?fatalities? at the end of the match where the winning player would, well, brutally murder his opponent. Parents were concerned and the game was even banned in Australia. Skip forward to the year 2015 and Mortal Kombat has returned and it is in it?s goriest, most glorified form. Enter Mortal Kombat X.
As I watched my princess assassin cut off a ninja?s hands before jumping on top of him and slicing his head into three parts that then slowly rolled away from each other, one thing came to my mind: it is someone?s job to come up with this stuff. The fatalities in Mortal Kombat X are insanely gory. They are the most graphic, unsettling ones the series has ever seen. With this said, it?s so gory that it becomes silly. It?s as if the game developers are mocking themselves. This effect is really, charming? It really hits the nostalgia feels hard. Every time fatality is pulled off it feels as if I?m back to the times when my dad and I would play Mortal Kombat III. The fatalities are great and with that out of the way we can now dive deeper and see why Mortal Kombat X is the best game the series has ever seen.
Featuring a roster of only twenty four kombatants, Mortal Kombat X makes up for what it lacks in roster size by giving every fighter three variations that all play completely different from each other. Playing Kitana?s assassin variation, I?m a blood spilling machine. Give me her royal storm variation, and I have no clue what to do. This makes it feel like there are three times as many characters as there are. MKX also took great risks with its roster, devoting eight spots to new comers. These new fighters are great additions and feel so well developed that I did not even know that some of them where new. For example, Erron Black feels like he has been a part of the series for decades. Not to mention all these new characters are insanely detailed in their design. D?Vorah, the gross bug queen, is so detailed that one cringes looking at her. This is the greatest roster the series has ever seen.
One complaint that MK always gets is that the combat, or ?kombat?, is too rugged. It feels choppy, slow, and does not play as smooth as Street Fighter. Well, throw that argument out the window because MKX features gameplay that rivals that of Street Fighter. The choppiness is there but once players get a feel for it fights become incredibly fast paced. The action never stops. The controls feel tight and there is never any moments where I?ve said ?Dang, I inputted a jump punch there,? or ?Why won?t my combos come out?? This is a huge improvement on the 2011 series reboot, a game where you felt like you were playing against the controls as much as you were playing against your opponent. Kitana?s forward square, square, triangle, down, forward square, forward, up, x, down forward square, down, back, x combo will come out every time it is inputted. Of course, practice is required in order to be able to pull off such complex combos. Mortal Kombat X has got you covered in that. It features multiple, customizable dojos where you can drill combos into an immortal opponent for as long as your heart?s content. After a few hours of beating up an eternal Sub-Zero, you?ll feel like you can conquer the world.
Jump into online play and prepare to die because everyone there is insanely good. Just like every fighting game before it, in Mortal Kombat X one learns by getting beaten time after time again. It is quite a grind and can be frustrating. If that isn?t for you then there is no need to fear because this game offers tons of content, or ?Kontent? should I say? Features include story mode; Klassic Towers, which play similar to the old school arcade cabinets; Living Towers, towers that are updated on the daily; and many more. One of my favorite features is the inclusion of Test Your Luck. In this mode players fight through many random events, such as fire raining from above, or being forced to fight without arms. It all makes up for hilarious gameplay and fun times.
Among the blood and guts, Mortal Kombat X delivers beautiful graphics, frame rates, and backgrounds. The fighters are detailed and as they are fighting they develop cuts and the clothing becomes torn. The frame rate never dips even when the screen gets cluttered. The backgrounds of the stages are the most impressive, however. The stages include animated backgrounds that showcase many unique things. In one, The Kove, there is a pirate ship fighting a fort and a hurricane comes in and wipes it out. This all adds up to a beautiful, smooth running game that is interesting and fun to play.
In ?Konclusion?, Mortal Kombat X is a fun game that anyone can pick up in play while also offering a competitive scheme for those who desire it. It walks that fine line of being able to keep everyone happy, something that a lot of fighters struggle with. It is at its goriest and its best and has set up many more Mortal Kombats to come. The future of the fighting game is bright.

So yeah. That's my review. The paper got a 9. I thought I'd share it with you.

Don't practice until you get it right. Practice until you can't get it wrong.
