Default Pet Care and Appreciation | OT | Adopted Inhuman Children

I know we have a "Post a pic of your pic of your pet" thread but I would like to have a general thread just to share and talk about the animal family members!

I have some hermit crabs. (It's hard to tell if they're even in the tank sometimes. They burrow in the dirt all the time plus they're nocturnal.)

Plus, two rabbits:

Comet aka "Chomo". I adopted him back in March 2012. He is 4 years old.

Halley (pronounced Hay-Lee) is 5 years old. I adopted her just a month ago. She is getting along well with Comet and they are now a bonded pair.

Ever since my family moved to Malaysia, friends of ours are taking care of Strider, our Rhodesian Ridgeback dog. He is about 10 years old. He has a backyard to play in and he has a doggy friend (Blackie, a black German Shepherd). I miss him a lot but I don't have room in my apartment for a 100+lb animal plus it's on the third floor so it would be difficult for him to walk up the stairs as a senior dog.

Feel free to share and chat about your own pets here!

Everyone knows my baby Oreo as the cutest dog ever. I just love her so much. She does this thing that if you start to scratch her and stop for a sec, she'll use her paw to motion for you to continue. Adorbs.

I have a 3 year-old cat I call Mr Kitty. I dunno what kind of cat he is, he's semi-long-haired with black/very dark brown fluffy fur.

He has this plush tiger he attacks, plays with and carries around in his mouth. most of the time he carries the tiger along with his toy mice into the shower, then he pulls the towels off the rack and drags them into the shower as well. I'll never understand why he does this.

Bad pic, but here he is with his plush tiger.

^^^I'm pet-sitting a rabbit right now. He's not neutered so he wants to go after the other rabbits even when he has a whole room to himself. He wants to mount my male in particular and nearly got in a fight with him when he managed to get past me into the other room. Plus, he poops everywhere and pees because he wants to mark his territory...

I'm starting to worry about him because his owner (or one of them anyway) bought him at college. They've spent the past semester hiding him at the dorm. It was clearly not a well-researched decision. I'm concerned they're just going to dump him at a shelter or even "release" him into the wild (which would be a death sentence for the little guy).

I'll keep you all updated on what he's doing.

I haven't had any pets in about eight years but I do want to get a cat at some point. Anyone have experience keeping one in an apartment? How difficult is it?

I'm living on my own with the rabbits which is similar.

It's best to get an apartment that allows pets. Hiding an animal at your place is just an unneeded stress plus the penalty if you're found out is usually pretty severe.

Apartments have different policies. Some add a monthly charge to your rent. My apartment has you make a one time "pet deposit" (mine was pretty steep at about $500 but most places are about $200)- some places refund it to you once you leave the apartment if it doesn't have any pet related damage. Others keep it for cleaning.

So if you decide to get a pet, you have to be prepared to stop any destructive behavior as you will get charged for it if you leave your apartment in disrepair.

I recommend getting an adult cat that has already been spayed/neutered. But every cat is different and even the most well-behaved animal will make some messes.

I returned the gangsta bunny to his owner last Friday. She said she's going to get him neutered so that will be good.

A short article about Hurricane Katrina and pets.

Took my baby Oreo to the groomer's yesterday and it's amazing how much different she looks. Like she's not even the same dog. So cute.

Never had a pet that needed to be groomed. Sounds like a pain.

You don't have to comb your bun's hair? Also, even short hair dogs need to be groomed, kinvy. Cut your dog's fingernails.

I had to cut my rabbit's fingernails once. I occasionally brush them but really it doesn't make a difference. Their fur is nice and tidy.

My dog's toenails never have gotten long enough to be cut. His fur is super short too. No undercoat or anything. Breed info here.

Damn you, kinvy. Damn you and your amazing dog. My Oreo hates her daily grooming needs. She especially doesn't like hair combing.

All those close up of the bunny's backside and I was only subjected to his butthole once. Very classy camera work. Anywho, yesterday I was on my bed using the laptop and Oreo was sleeping next to me when she suddenly stood up out of nowhere and started growling while staring intently at the door. I then jokingly told her to bark at whatever was there. She started barking like crazy. There was no one else in the house and nothing had made a noise that could have spooked her like that.

Pet litter intended for small animals is over-priced.

I can buy a huge 25lb of paper-based cat litter for the same price as a small bag of "rabbit" litter. (Wood shavings suck and once I finish with the bag I'm currently using. I'm never using it again.)

So does my cat.

Why does he always sleep like this? Looks weird because I can't see his head in the pic.

That's a weird croissant, Peanut. lol

The rabbit I babysat got adopted by a new family so that's a huge load off my mind. I was worried about the little guy. I hope he loves his new home!

Visited my dog today and gave him a bath.

I'm taking him to the vet Thursday morning. He has a sore on his leg, one of lipomas has gotten bigger, and he appears to have a hernia. He's about 10 years old. I'm worried that he won't have much time left.

Here's a picture of all the animals back at home right now, minus my cat Virgil

Here's Virgil

Unfortunately we had to put down my other dog, Trixie a few weeks back after a 4 year life long battle with her hyper sensitive allergies finally reached a point where she could no longer live a comfortable life, despite the massive amount of medication she was on.

Looks like you got another dog, Joba.

Do you use a special brush?

Yeah, it's a good brush for removing tangled fur and stuff. Also the underfur or wool or whatever it's called.

Day 2 results and the brush. I think I got it all out. xD

I recall that there was an artist somewhere that made felt versions of people's pets using their fur. Kinda weird but cool.

I was doing research on rabbit care and how to figure out the difference between male and female bunnies. I came across this interesting fact:

Quote:
In male rabbits, the testicles are huge: far too big to fit comfortably into the small patch of skinlocated between the anus and the penis. Instead of sitting just below the anus, encasedwithin a singular, discrete, shared scrotal bag, each of the male rabbit's testicles has its own individual scrotal sac, which is positioned alongside the penis region (one testicle to each side of the penis).

My dog is doing okay. He had just gained weight. He's on antibiotics for the sore on his leg.

I had to take my rabbit to the vet because he got ear mites. I just have to give him some medicine every couple of weeks. Should go away in a month.

Oreo has recently taken to sleeping on an old sleeping bag we have and then one day it fell on the floor and i guess she thought that's where we wanted her to sleep because she went right to it and slept there even though it was in the corner of the room.

Story time:

My best friend lives out in a rural area where a lot of people dump their animals. Occasionally, cats show up at his house so he ends up taking care of them. He already has 6 cats so he's at his limit right now.

Bear showed up at his house a couple of weeks ago. Despite being a stray, he's incredibly mild-mannered e.g. the vet took his temperature and he continued to purr.

When the vet examined him, she found that conjunctivitis, heartworm disease, a respiratory infection w/ lungworms, and FIV (the feline equivalent of AIDS). On paper, it seems that the best option was to put him down but despite his medical problems, he wasn't in any apparent pain so we decided to put him on antibiotic for a few days before making a decision.

He's quickly made a great recovery and is staying with me. He's gotten over his eye and respiratory infections, gotten all his vaccinations, and has been fixed. He purrs regularly and eats a lot.

tl;dr: I've recently adopted a cat named "Bear". He is very sick but very sweet.

This is my lovely Sophie who sadly passed away last week from cancer. She really helped keep me from getting too lonely when I started living on my own. I'm looking to adopt a new cat soon, because I already miss having a pet so much.
