Default Rhythm Game General Thread

Yeah, I just want a place to post about rhythm games. What're you gonna do about it?

This'll just be a general place for rhythm game news and discussion. Talk about your favorite games, upcoming releases, stuff you're trying out for the first time... whatever.

To start, rhythm games are easily my favorite genre. My favorite of all time is Ouendan 2, but some of my other favorite series, in no particular order, include Taiko no Tatsujin, Rhythm Heaven, and Gitaroo Man. Recently I've been getting into IIDX too.

I love rhythm games even though I've only played a few:

-Elite Beat Agents
-Love live! School Idol Festival
-Patapon 1 & 2

I'm downloading Cytus right now. It has gotten decent reviews.

Cytus is cool.
Remember to look up how to play the "Alive" songs and how to find all the hidden songs in each chapter.

Now is a great time to be a rhythm game fan, especially for vita/ playstation tv owners. we just got

taiko no tatsujin- no reason for it not to be pstv compatable, but a fun little mix. reminds me of pop'n music 12
ia/vt colorful- project diva clone that looks interesting. on my radar

coming up october SuperBeat Xonic- the newest DJmax game. day 1 purchase for me.
december Miracle Girls Festival- project diva gameplay without miku. i have it pre-ordered
february Project Diva X- this was just announced recently. I'll import it because sega has been so slow localizing

but right now i'm 5 days away from Project Mirai DX. the demo taught me the basic gameplay so I am ready! its a shame bemani cs games are so 2000 and late though. 6 years ago i was clicking away well over a thousand notes in a two minute iidx or pop'n song, nowadays these four minute songs max at half that notecount. Home versions may have gotten easier but I still love them. My collection (mostly ps1 and ps2) will hit 200 soon at this rate.

I tried out the demo for Project Mirai DX and while I don't really care that much about Miku, the gameplay got me hooked. Probably won't get it day one but I'll definitely try to get it in the future, I gotta have some new rhythm game on my 3DS until NoA decides to localize Rhythm Heaven.

This year has been stupid good as an import/Western rhythm game player.
  • Round 1 continues expanding in the US, bringing lots of arcade-exclusive rhythm games along with it
  • DDR 2014 location testing in the US, along with global e-Amuse
  • Despite DJMAX seeming dead, the studio will be releasing SUPERBEAT XONiC later this year
  • The definitive Project Mirai game comes out, along with a localized release
  • Rhythm Tengoku: The Best+ releases despite Tsunku's cancer
  • 4 home Taiko no Tatsujin releases in one year, including its return to region-free consoles, as well as kinda getting its first localized released in a decade via Yakuza 5
  • Theatrhythm expands to other franchises with Theatrhythm Dragon Quest
  • Persona also gets a rhythm game spinoff
  • Marvelous goes from a Senran Kagura rhythm spinoff thing to a respectable rhythm game in IA/VT (or so I hear, haven't tried it myself)
  • Western rhythm games are resurrected with both Rock Band and Guitar Hero getting new entries
  • A ****ing official PC version of IIDX just had an alpha test yesterday???

Really, all I can ask for at this point are iNiS and Tetsuya Mizuguchi being freed from mobile game hell. But it's been exciting times, for sure.

Why is Gitaroo Man the greatest rhythm game to exist?
Don't practice until you get it right. Practice until you can't get it wrong.

Is Gitaroo Man really that good? I've never even heard of it until recently. It's one of the few that slipped past me...

IIDX Infinitas got me amped! Beatmania is the backbone of all music games and it is a sin Konami gave up on home versions half a decade ago. I deprived myself of listening to anything past the last ps2 mix (16) so the thought of playing 17 through 23 on my djdao arcade style controller and good tv makes me squeal. I even broke my laptop trying to install LunaticRave2 so i could at least emulate those mixes, hence my absence from this site all summer.

IIDX is more than a video game to me. It's how I meditate. Once I'm warmed up something else takes over and does all the work. It's also what I was playing moments before my ufo experience 9 years ago. Don't take the seizure warning at the loading screen lightly.

Imported Rhythm Heaven: The Best+ for 3DS in June, it's my first RH game and I love it. So random and still easily accessible because the gameplay is simple (I guess that's true for all rhythm games). Not understanding japanese makes it more fun somehow, since I first I need to figure out when to press what and the mechanics.

Currently trying to get an 80+ score on Remix 10 (Last one). It's pretty damn hard but I've only tried 3 times.

I think there's more minigames I can unlock with those orb things, but they seem like a pain in the butt to get. Any tips?
