Default Health and Fitness |OT| 3DSF Gets Physical

Here we can discuss general health and fitness, give advice, share progress on fitness goals, and hopefully motivate each other. This includes sports, diet, weight loss, anything you can think of.

I'll update the OP with helpful links as I find them or get posted in the thread.
  • Starting with one of my favorites: Symmetric Strength - useful for those interested in weightlifting, compares your lifts with the standards set by your weight and height and judges the symmetry of your body

  • Beginner's Health and Fitness Guide - covers all the basics of diet and exercise, and how to get started

  • BMI Calculator - can be somewhat inaccurate but gives a general idea of where you should be weight-wise

  • MyFitnessPal - diet tracker that you can connect to your smartphone, even lets you scan the barcode on your food to quickly transfer nutritional information

---------------------

A few questions to get things going:

What are some of your biggest health and fitness goals?

- Increase bench press max from 185 to 205 by end of year
- Increase back squat max from 225 to 255 by end of year
- Get 5K time to sub 20 minutes (my personal record in HS was 20:30 but I've gotten lazy, trying to get back into running now)
- Eat and sleep more

What's your favorite form of cardio - running, swimming, or cycling?

- Running with cycling as a close second. I suck at swimming.

What's your favorite healthy snack?

- Probably bananas, been having a weird craving for them recently

Do/did you play any sports in high school?

- Ran cross country for four years, track for one. Played a little ultimate as well.

What are some of your biggest health and fitness goals?

- Find time to exercise. I wake up every morning at 7 am and work until 6 pm. My offspring are in bed by 7-7:30. I’m usually so tired by this point that I only stay up an hour or two longer which is my only time to eat, shower, fill out paperwork, and any stuff related to my personal life. As a single mother, my every waking moment is dedicated to my progeny and providing for us as a family. The result of this is that I take care of them instead of myself. I used to be a star athlete and in great shape. I want to get back to the point where I’m working out on a regular basis instead of passing out into bed every night (as understandable as that may be, I want to be better and set that example for my kiddos).

-I’d like to get back into a walking schedule during my lunches at work. I can get in 1 – 2 miles before I have to be back at my desk.

-I wanna find a way to include some minor workout activities at work. Like sitting on an exercise ball instead of a chair, squats, lunges, etc. I always take the stairs instead of the elevator. AND OMG IT’S ALMOST WINTER AND JUNK FOOD IS GOING TO BE ABOUNDING CUZ OF THE HOLIDAYS. Need to avoid the craze. :C

-As it stands currently, I usually only eat once a day unless a meal is provided at work. This isn’t ideal for my metabolism and I acknowledge that in the long run it’s probably contributing to several negative health conditions. I wanna start getting good about eating breakfast and “grazing” throughout the day ~

What's your favorite form of cardio - running, swimming, or cycling?

- I HATE RUNNING AHHHH. I can only run if it’s outside and the weather is ideal and and and and… I’m a huge running snob. I love hiking though!
Living in the Northwest though, I ADORE swimming and would absolutely do it every day if I could. I was an Olympic hopeful at 12 years old and was training was 18-20 year olds. But here, swimming outdoors is the only thing that’s free and for about 6 months of the year that’s out of the question cuz it’s so freaking cold. So for me – best form of cardio right now is elliptical. Love me some elliptical. I like to do 20 minutes of fast elliptical for cardio before and after whatever the main workout is.

What's your favorite healthy snack?

- I love vegetables/fruit if I have access to them. Apple slices, carrots, and grapes would be my fav. I did Paleo for a little bit to try and help with my rheumatoid arthritis and it was seriously one of the best things ever (so expensive though).

Do/did you play any sports in high school?

- I played basketball for three years, volleyball for two, and badminton for four. I also had myself on a fixed running schedule in the morning/during the summer as much as I hated it, went to the gym twice a week, was kickboxing every day, and took dancing lessons on and off.

I also just want to take a moment to encourage all of you. I think that in general when people see fitness threads or gym advertisements, they immediately think of all the meatheads and people with athletic backgrounds and go, “Yeah that’s not for me. I’m just not that type.”. Those people may be present, but taking care of yourself is for everyone. And I personally am way way WAY more inspired at the gym or when working out when I see someone who isn’t one of those people but is still busting their asses to improve themselves. I love that. Seriously! You’re awesome for even showing up! And even if you’re huffing and puffing, red in the face, looking like you’re about to pass out – hey, I always remind myself that no matter what you’re doing or how much of that thing you’re doing – you’re 100% lapping the people at home sitting on the couch wishing they were doing something. I think you guys are all champions. And whether you’re trying to get ripped and doing crazy intense P90-X or just walking your dogs every night – that is seriously worth praise. People in this country don’t pay healthiness much mind. So the fact that you’re taking time to even try is a great thing.

You’re doing great. Seriously. Keep it up. And it’s going to pay off!

Thanks Sciz, been meaning to get some more exercise before Winter begins. What are some of the better weight loss workouts for the Fall months?

I, in general, just want to keep in shape. I did some martial arts and do a lot of meditating and practice at home. I do, however, need to improve my breathing and cardio.

As for cardio, I love swimming. I swam a lot in college, but now that I'm not in college and there aren't any places to swim at home, I don't have a way to do it. I lose breath really quickly. I'm really fast, but I have no longevity.

In high school I was so lazy. I joined football, then quit. Tried track. Quit. I was in Tennis for a while, then quit like right before it was over.....High school wasn't a very good time for me.

What are some of your biggest health and fitness goals?

-Actually eating

My diet has been awful for awhile because I just don't feel like eating. About a month ago, my friend started coming over every morning at 9 AM to make me breakfast. My health is improving but sometimes I still forget to eat. But having at least one good meal helps.

Once I finally get consistent with eating, I'd like to start exercising. Just stretches and maybe some simple weight-lifting exercises.

You see I'm just looking forward to never having to play football again or do those killer workouts again in my life. My biggest goals are to rest and let my body heal itself.

Have you tried working out in the morning? I used to go on light runs right after waking up, nothing too hard so I wouldn't feel tired the rest of the morning. Either way I have a lot of respect for single moms like you who still try to work in some exercise. I can't imagine trying to juggle a job and kids without drastically cutting my workout time.

It shouldn't be too cold out yet, depending on where you live, but cardio will be your friend. I would actually sign up for a 5K or a similar event. This would move your focus from just losing weight to running distances and times, which are more controllable. Your progress will be more noticeable since starting out you mostly improve your mental endurance. With proper diet the weight loss will come.

Thanks. I can't imagine being in college and working out so much so props to you too Dx

That's a great idea actually. There's a long strip of road behind my apartment. I could run up and down it a couple of times so I get the cardio without being too far from my children and being worried if they were to wake up. Then I could have my lunch walk and do some calisthenics and weights at night. That seems really balanced actually. I'd like that a lot.

Funny how things change. In less than a month after football ends I'm back in the gym. I took up boxing again :3 my goal is to be alabama's featherweight champ again before May. Had a killer workout today and forgot to wrap my hands so my knuckles are all bruised and battered. Tomorrow is an endurance and agility day so I'm looking forward to that.

First time deadlifting today and I pulled a 335 lbs max. Really surprised myself. I love going in with absolutely no expectations for a lift.

Well the rough part of the week is over. Now it's just agility and technique honing until Saturday's exhibition. I'm going to try to get someone to film it for you guys.

Well boys I got the **** beat out of me. Ended up losing but I fought all 6 rounds. Lost by a few points in the end. Really was the best fight I've ever fought though. I'm sore all over and I have a few cuts over my eye but other than that I'm good. Training resumes tomorrow.
