Default How Do You Feel About Potentially Shorter Console Cucles/Iterative Upgrades

Recently Kotaku mentioned that Sony is exploring the possibility of a "PS4.5", an upgraded PS4 console. Nintendo released the New 3DS, which is an upgraded 3DS. And Phil Spencer of Xbox also hinted that Xbox One may be getting hardware upgrades.

So how do you feel about that?

I may be okay with it depending on prices, features, adn if there'd be a trade in upgrade system in place. But at the same time, it kinda takes away what a lot of people like about consoles: You buy one and you don't have to think for 5 years.

It's stupid. The average consumer who gets a console wants it because they're straight forward and a more tech savvy person who'd be interested in upgrades every other year is probably just going to use PC anyway. The market for it is ****ing small.

We've already been through this with Sega's add-ons in the Genesis era, failures like the 64DD and Nintendo's handheld rereleases like the New 3DS and DSi. Developers don't really use the extra features provided by the new devices since they lack the audience the base system offers and they fall into obscurity.

It's not impossible to make the iOS model work on consoles but it'd have to be handled and marketed brilliantly, and come from a company with as much blind brand loyalty as Apple, and I don't think any of the current big console companies are the ones who'll be able to do that. Especially Nintendo with their history of poorly supported peripherals and Microsoft with their current attitude of pushing most of their exclusives onto PC anyway.

It's a bad idea.

Mobile and PC are the devices that get constant iterations and no one wants that for consoles since the whole appeal was that they were supposed to have longer life cycles.

I don't like it. Didn't like it with the New 3DS, don't like it now.

It gives me a good reason not to jump in early or even during the middle of the generation like I did with the PS3.

I prefer console gaming because physical discs are still common and they're on blu-rays, not DVDs. I'm not sure I can go the PC route and be happy since I don't want my purchased licenses tied to a store that might not exist in the future and digital licenses don't protect you against games being pulled off the store.

So I'll probably just wait until the end of next-gen to buy a PS5. Not like I'm playing that many games anyway.

Thumbs up

I like my New 3DS XL very much. So, if the upgrades are amazing, I'll pony up for the new system.

Hate it. Favorite thing about consoles is that once I have the functioning console, I don't need to upgrade until the next generation. This completely defeats the point of one of the few perks consoles have over PC.
Always buy the game first to see if you will enjoy the demo.
