I wonder if anyone could give me an advice. I'm thinking of buying Nintendo 3DS XL just for casual playing. Should I go for the new model or will the old model be satisfactory for occasional playing?
I have also heard that the old 3DS doesn't have very good 3D system and that the new one uses front camera for 3D which improved a lot. So if for casual gameplay you'd recommend the old model, do you think I might as well go for the 2DS and save money? I want to buy it just so I can play the Pokemon X/Y games. So what would be the best option to go for? Casual gaming (you know, when travelling, when on the toilet, etc.) and only looking into it because of Pokemon X/Y games. |

If money is a concern go with the 2DS. Its fine for just pokemon. I would recommend Ruby/Sapphire and of course Sun/Moon when that comes out.
If you really want the 3D i would recommend the new 3DS. If you ever think you will play Monster Hunter or Xenoblade then choose the New 3ds. Or if you just want the clam shell design and the bigger screen you can go for an original XL.

I keep seeing the New 3DS XL in the store and am so tempted because the head tracking 3D is awesome, but I had to buy a new original XL a few months before the N3DS was released and it's still in great shape and, honestly, I've always played in 3D and have never had trouble keeping it aligned. If I were buying now I'd get the New XL, though. It's really an amazing device. Nothin' else like it.

I have just bought a New 3Ds XL this weekend. I had a 3ds many years ago and my son has one but I have been a vita player for the last few years. I have to say I am impressed with the New XL.
The 3ds is better on the new one as I kept permanently off before, as it drove me nuts! I picked up Xenoblade which can only be played on the new one. I would recommend New 3ds over original any day. I know Xenoblade is the only title which is for the new one only at the moment but there will be more. Also the SNES virtual console games are for the new ones only which for me is a plus these are here. Also the machine quality is far better - including right stick and extra shoulder buttons.

I suggest New 3DS console. You can play the all of the latest 3ds games with Sky3ds+, such as Pokemon X/Y, Monster Hunter X, Bravely Second – End Layer, Dragon Quest Monsters - Joker 3, Youkai Watch, Youkai Sangokushi, and so forth.

Depends how much spare money you have available and what the price difference between the old 3ds xl and the new 3dsxl is in your region.
If you can afford it I would personally go for the new 3ds XL - but the resolution is no better than the old, the colours look a bit more saturated (but that is subjective), 3d is noticeably better. Its a heavy beast - the original model is lighter. the new 3ds xl is a finger magnet and really needs a cover (Hori TPU duriflexi) while the original version - you can get away with just a case to carry it around outside. Alternatives if available to you is the new 3ds - if its cheaper. The screens are larger than the original 3ds. I'm oldish and find the XL screens a lot less of a strain on my eyes. But I could probably manage a new 3ds. The original 3ds screens are too small for me to play for any length of time - and the 2ds has screens the same size as the original 3ds - tiny! I would never consider one for this reason. Nintendo sometimes have refurbished units for sale. As said you could end up playing several games, there area lot of good ones around! And I would buy sooner rather than later because I would guess we have around 2 years before a new unit - possibly linked in with the forthcoming NX will be here. Prices in the UK are slightly higher than they have been (probably cos of E3), look for a good deal, they are around. (in UK Shopto isn't bad price wise, Edit: No their price has jumped from ?150 to ?180!!! Amazon - price might drop in the next week or so). Last edited by katysu; 06-19-2016 at 03:23 PM. |

I bought the Pokemon pikachu special edition 2ds, I understand that it is a cheap alternative to the newer systems but for the ?80 I spent on it, I didn't really like it. The plastic felt very cheap and the buttons were of low quality as well. But this could have just been as it was a plastic transparent cover and not all 2ds's are like that.
Anyway I just recently picked up the new 3ds xl and it is amazing. The quality feels very durable and well-made and the bigger screens make the 3D experience well worth the extra money. If you are just wanting to play Pokemon games definitely go for the 2ds. If you want the 3D but can't afford the new one, as someone said try get a second handone and if you want to play bigger games like Monster Hunter you should go for the new 3ds. |
