Default Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney

The official Professor Layton Vs. Ace Attorney thread. This looks like one of the best 3DS games there will be.

Wow, thanks so much for the link to the trailer. I hadn't seen anything on this, it sounds really interesting. I actually kind of surprised they combined both of those games, I never would have thought they would make a Layton/Phoenix Write game. Very cool, I hope it makes it to the US.

I've actually never played an Phoenix Wright game, but I'm such a huge Layton fan, I am SO hoping this makes it to the US!!!! Now if they'd only release Eternal Diva here as well, my Layton dreams would come true!

I've never played either of the two series, but somehow this has me very hyped o.o I can't even imagine how exctatic the real fans must be xD

Maybe I should go pick up a Phoenix Wright game today, if I can find one. That trailer = epic~

I am a die-hard Layton fan.

I hope they aren't Japan only

This = me. I have such an urge to go to the mall right now and buy the three Layton games released so far here. As for Ace Attorney, I have the first one on the Wii which I bought a few months ago...and never touched!

Oh, yeah, I'm a fan of Layton and Wright and I am PSYCHED!!!!
The newest one is Miles Edgeworth Investigations. The first 4, you'd probably have to buy used ones. I had to look everywhere and import the 3rd game to get them all. They're AWESOME!

That QR code is not for a Mii. It's seems to be for something related to the site.

Never played a game from either series, but I'm a sucker for crossovers.

I'm hoping it comes with an artbook or soundtrack CD (or both). That would be great!

I just did the same, and I love the puzzles. They're the kind I have always enjoyed doing. I will definitely pick up the next two games soon.

It's been so LONG.

The game was announced back in 2010 and I remember being hyped as heck about it.

Very excited for the release. Love both of the series and I'll gladly support this localization.

Awesomeness. I have been eagerly awaiting a localisation announcement for this title since it was announced in 2010.

This game, along with Azran Legacies will make 2014 the year of Layton (for those of us in NA anyhow).

I was so worried it wasn't going to be localized (after the underperformance in Japan). I wouldn't be surprised if it's eShop only.

If it's Level 5 that is responsible for distribution, they will likely give us the option to buy a retail copy (based on their past localisations, anyway).

If it's Capcom... let's just hope it's Level 5 ^^

Good thing one can buy a retail version after all.

Speaking of which, can anyone who has played this game share his/her opinion on it? It has received generally good reviews from critics, but it would be nice to hear some user reviews while those of us in NA wait in anticipation for this game.

With only 2 days until its NA release, I am greatly looking forward to playing this new title. With that said, are any of you fellow NA 3DS owners also anticipating this title?

I'm finally playing PL vs PW:AA.

I just finished the prologue chapters. It's about what I expected.

The art style difference between PW and PL don't quite mesh.

I'm almost done with the game.

Chapter 4 was a really great Phoenix Wright case.

Nice to finally see some discussion for this game .

I finished it about two weeks ago. I liked it overall and found the story to be interesting. I also appreciated the occasional convergence of gameplay styles (e.g. being able to use hint coins during the Phoenix Wright courtroom sessions) as well as the ability to use buttons to control the gameplay instead of just the stylus as seen in the Layton games.

That said, the puzzles on the Layton side were generally easier and fewer than what you would find in a Layton game and none of the prosecutors on the Wright side of the story were as interesting as those found in his own games. Nonetheless, the mishmash of the two franchises was neat and the lower price-point of the game makes it a lower-risk investment. Having an interest in both franchises does help, though.

@AeonDark: As a fan of both series, this was a must buy for me. It's definitely worth it.

If you're only familiar with one of the series and are on the fence about it, I'll try to tell ya as much as I can without spoiling it.

I think on-average you'll spend more time playing the game Professor Layton style- walking around wherever and solving puzzles. There are only about 70 puzzles total in the game and many of them are completely optional and in general they were a lot easier than what I've seen in the other PL games.

Phoenix Wright gets a total of 4 separate courtroom cases (the final one being twice as long as the others) but they aren't nearly as long as what you would find in a mainline Ace Attorney game obviously. The hint coins that you get from poking around really take the guesswork out of the courtroom cases. You'll find more than enough hint coins from poking around.

The story itself was definitely more like the Layton series than the Ace Attorney games. I enjoyed it but it was definitely out-there.

My final thoughts on the story:
Spoiler!

One thing that kind of sucks about the game, in retrospect, are the occasional frame-rate issues later in the game. While they do not hurt the gameplay, it is a shame the developers did not try and fix it as it often looks like it occurs more so as a result of a lack of optimisation than a lack of hardware power.

As I said, it does not affect the gameplay and does not prevent me by extension from recommending the game.
