As we all know, Paper Mario (which is an RPG) is going to be on the 3DS pretty soon, but what about the Mario & Luigi RPG games?

I'm a huge fan of Paper Mario, but I'm also a huge fan of these Mario RPG titles on handhelds:





I, for one, would love a 4th one in the series on the 3DS. I'm really hoping Nintendo announces this at some point. Oh, and I also found this fanmade art for a 4th one.

What do you think of it?

Any good ideas on what you'd like the 4th one to be about? Like, location, characters, items, moves, etc. What you liked and disliked about the 1st, 2nd and 3rd one and would change for a 4th one.


EDIT: Sorry, Waluigi fanboys, Mario & Luigi 4 is already announced and it looks like there's no Waluigi. Muahahaha!

I'd love another Mario & Luigi RPG but I think it should stay as a ds handheld as the 3DS might be too advanced for a Mario and Luigi RPG but for people not getting the 3DS Mario & Luigi RPG would be great, I don't see how the 3D would work anyway....

Also I loved the first and second one and I loved the third one but it had little to no replay value, meaning I've played through PiT and Superstar saga millions of times but I only played through BiS twice (the first time was on the japanese one but I acidently deleted my save file)

STORYLINE FOR 4TH GAME CAUTION WILL MOST LIKELY BE CRAP AND OVERLY LONG!!!1

It's a peaceful day in the mushroom kingdom, the birds are singing the toads are...Toading? , Mario and Luigi are resting at home *cough*WatchingOldMovies*cough* and Peach's castle seems happy...... BOOOM!!!! What's this?! Mario jumps out of his bed and Luigi..well jumps out the window, the two go outside to investigate, at the bridge of Peach's castle there seems to be a fuss going on "Mario old Boy!" Said Toadsworth "It's about time we needed a Hero like you!" "As you may see Mario ol' boy Peach's caslte has been bombed during my daily shopping spree for Princess Peach, I came back as soon as I heard the noise and the door seemed to be blocked!" Another toad runs past, " It's Bowser I bet! He wants the Princess so he makes no way to get in!" there's loud thudding and Bowser is walking down "Mwahaha It seems you are all here, I guess it will make it more fun to kidnap princess Peach!" "How could you!" said one of the toads " You blew up the entrance to the castle you could have killed-" "What's that!!!" shouted Bowser the entrance is blocked??? Bowser walks down the bridge "Hah No problem!" Bowser punches the bricks away!

With Mario RPG games I tend to love the humour but not much else about them. I struggled through Super Paper Mario on Wii (first half was fun, second half was poor and it was only bloody mindedness that got me through it) and eventually managed to finish Bowsers Inside Story on the DS (it was brilliant, but I often had long spells where I didn't feel like playing it), but Super Mario RPG and the N64 Paper Mario (both on VC) both got dropped after the initial charm wore off.

I think a new Mario & Luigi RPG for the system is inevitable, but because it took me so long to beat Bowsers Inside Story I'm hoping they leave it for at least a year or two. If Fawful is the main villain though it'd be hard to resist buying it. :P

I think Paper Mario may take the place of the Mario & Luigi series in the same way Ocarina of Time is taking the place of another Phantom Hourglass-like Zelda game.

I own the latter two games of the series and I don't think I've completed either. Partners in Time I got to the boss, but didn't manage to beat it, and Bowser's Inside Story I got about mid way before being distracted with another game.
I think my little sister's saved over both my files since, so if I do want to go back to them I'd have to restart.

I like the series, but I don't really like it as much as Paper Mario. If they were to release a new game I would probably get it, but I'm not desperate for a new one.

As much as I love Paper Mario, I hope it doesn't take over the Mario & Luigi RPG series. I hope they can coexist.

That's what I thought at first. I was thinking maybe the 3DS is too advanced for how the series is portrayed, but then again, it seemed to be perfectly fine going from GBA to DS. I think if it was on the 3DS, they'd make it remain the same as the other 3, just a little bit graphically better.

Hey... just because Paper Mario is coming to the 3DS, doesn't mean there eventually can't be a Mario & Luigi RPG 4.

I would love there too be a Mario & Luigi RPG 4. I feel a reboot coming on, like another trilogy. I feel the whole Fawful thing has come to it's conclusion, though this is Mario & Luigi RPG so obviously there has to be references around every corner.

I really like that picture, I feel Wario and Waluigi would work well in the games and it would be good for Waluigi to make his non-casual debut - he's been restricted to partying, dancing, racing and playing sports for too long now and why not have Daisy in the story too?

They could have the setting as Sarasaland. With Super Mario Land coming out on VC, and it's sequels likely to follow it's the perfect time to revisit the place in a game that has so many quirky references to Mario's past in it, Tatanga could have a cameo role too. It would all be a throwback to Wario making his first appearance in a Super Mario Land game.

Obviously, new villain, enemies, plans to take over and Bowser have to be in there too. But it could definitely work on the 3DS if they 'relaunch' the series with the same spirit that went into the other 3.

I would love it, but keep the humor of the third one and the difficulty of the second and first.

Yes, Waluigi and Daisy need to be put in actual games, no more casual, party and mini-games.

It also wouldn't be the same without Fawful.

Definitely want this to happen, its about Time Daisy and Waluigi are placed in a main stream Mario game. I hope Nintendo and AlphaDream are up for it.

I would love to see another Mario & Luigi game. It's the only RPG I've ever kept an interest in through the whole game, and I just love the style. They're all creative, varied, and endearing, and I'd like to see it again on the 3DS.

I just don't know if that will happen. We already have Paper Mario on the 3DS, so our Mario RPG quota is filled for now. Not to mention, a sprite-based, overhead-camera game doesn't seem to be the type of game the 3DS is attracting right now. It's all about more console-like graphics. Still, Professor Layton made the 3D jump, and Ghost Recon is pretty DS-like in terms of graphical style, so the probably is still a good chance we'll see another entry in the series.

And I have to second the poster on the last page; Wario and Waluigi would be perfect for a Mario & Luigi game, especially if they were playable.

Instead of the 2.5D graphics for the first 3 games, I'd actually like to see some 3D graphics, considering pop-out 3D wouldn't really work on a 2D game. It would be awesome exploring the Mushroom World in full 3D.

Eh, that might actually be too advanced for the 3DS right now.

I've been a fan of series since Superstar Saga, which was easily one of the best GBA games of all time. Of course I'd love to see it continue. I do hope that they have a better first effort on the system than the one on the DS, which was good, but not nearly as much as the original and Bowser's Inside Story.

Yes, yes, yes, absolutely yes. Mario & Luigi is my second favorite series of RPGs (right below Paper Mario of course.) They seem to be the only games in the franchise that actually treat the pair as real brothers. Sarasaland seems like the perfect setting for a new game. Wario and Waluigi would actually be relevant to a storyline for once.

But... as others have mentioned, how would the 3D work? Euhehn.... surely they can have a 3DS title released, that doesn't incoperate 3D effects at all, right? I just don't know.

Marching Towards A New Era Of Hope After The Seven-Year Tribulation

I'd love forthem to make a fourth one! Here's what I'd like to have in it:

Return of the Shroobs as main villains
Return of Fawful: Ok, alot of you are probably like, "Fawful died in M&L BIS!"
however if you remember, at the end of the game, when Bowser spits everyone out, he also spits out all the Dark Star remains. So my idea is, at the beginning of the game, we see a cutscene of the Shroobs collecting the Dark Star stuff using some kind of device on their ship. The Shroobs get all of the stuff together, and put it into a tube. Inside the tube, the Dark Star dust collects, and Fawful is reborn. Due to the death of bot their Princesses, the Shroobs believe Fawful to be some kind of ancient spirit, and make him their leader. Fawful's appearence is now like his appearence in BIS before the Dark Star, however he now has a purple robe with Shroob markings on it, his skin is all black, his teeth are purple, and his eyes are red. Fawful is now armed with dual laser guns which run on Dark Star energy.

A 4th on the 3DS would be great...then again, Paper Mario just moved from console to handheld, so a Mario & Luigi Wii would be supercool. Shroobs bore me. I'd want to see an all new villain with shroobs as cameos. OR CACKLETTA.

[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]1-up mushroom: a harder to find mushroom that allows any who use it to attempt to 1-up themselves from the fail they just done.

I don't really like any of the Mario & Luigi games. Although I DO like the story and I guess the graphics, but the battle system is way too simple and easy. I can just evade all attacks by jumping with both brothers at once, without even thinking about which one will get attacked (like the game wants you to).

Paper Mario is far superior, can't wait for that.

What if for a Mario and Luigi 4, you could play As Daisy and Peach when you're not Playing as Mario and Luigi? (Peach could Use her Hearts from Super Smash brothers Brawl and Her Umbrella, and Daisy could use a Daisy-a-rang and Cartwheels or something..)

Personally I liked the Paper Mario series much more and the Mario RPG's (other than paper mario) just didn't seem to fit. Although I did like Mario RPG on the snes

I wouldn't mind a Mario & Luigi on the 3DS. I enjoyed the first two game a lot but I think I like the Paper Mario series more. It makes no diffrence to me if they decide to continue the series or not.

I guess it would be kinda cool if they remade Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars in 3D with 3DS graphics with some new extra content.

Would like a "Yes" option, since I don't really like the series that much... but think it would be good on the 3DS.(Mainly since it been common on portables)

That fan logo with Wario & Waluigi is quite cool. It makes a lot of sense for a fourth installment, too. I'd love to see that or one with Peach & Daisy for a new Mario & Luigi game on the 3DS.

Freakin want a fourth installment so badly I love the series. But I agree I hope it's more like Superstar Saga as that was the best one. Bros attacks > Items. And yes, Wario & Waluigi would be a great addition. I don't think it's necessary for this game to travel into 3d realm as far as character models go. Just update sprites and pretty environments, maybe the environments can be 3-dimensional with a cool cel shaded look but maybe leave the sprites. Hopefully they expand on everything for a longer, more epic adventure that still retains the humor.

Another game from my favourite Mario series? Hell yeah I'd love to see another one for the 3DS.

I really do want a new mario and luigi rpg for the 3ds. Also I'd want other playable charecters besides just mario and kuigi. In my opinin the added charecters made the series more fun. My own ideas for extra players would be wario and waluigi because the villain kidnaps daisy and says to bring the current star dues ex machina pieces to trade for her back. Otherwise I'd like to have villain make premptive stike on mario bros. to transfer their brains into goombas that bowser messes up witch causes peach and bowser to switch bodies. Then peach and bowser can be the extra charecters and there is a good excuse to have them start off without there all there abilities. You could theb have bowser(in peaches body) escape getting captured by villain and trying get his body back while peach(n bowsers body) deals with the mario bros. and bowser's minions thinking she's bowser as she pursues the villain to try and get changed back. As for villain ideas I agree fawful could come back as a ghost working with or possessing current villain. Otherwise I'd just suggest a new charecter that is a mad scientist that used leftover shroob tech to create evil spores that mutate stuff into shroob monsters.

Hell yes. These games are freaking amazing. I'd love for Nintendo to continue the series on the 3DS.

ME TOO!!! I would LOVE a fourth game, that is why I voted. The thing is though that there has been a couple of hints in the 2nd and 3rd game. the second game was hinted that Elder Princess Shroob (in PIT that She said"Foolish mushroom heads, you may have bested me but Shroobs will LIVE ON. One day the Shroobs will dance on the buried remains of this pathetic kingdom''). In the 3rd game Bowser's Inside Story, it is stated that Elder Princess Shroob, and 3 Commander Shroobs, and 6 Junior Shrooboids did survive and that would mean a sequel. Am I right? Tell me what you think if you played the two games and would like a sequel with all the enemy's from the 2nd game into the 4th game? I would prefer that all the enemy's and bosses would return and be stronger than the first time, thus producing a challenge. Would you guys agree?

I think a fourth installment with Wario and Waluigi would be epic. Maybe like, it's a game that tells their back-story as well as whatever the actual plot would be. There should be 2 completely separate stories; one for each set of brothers. They'd coincide with each other (of course) and once you complete both, there's a final story where they all come together and take a journey together.~

Absolutely, but seeing as how the Paper Mario series has made it's way to a handheld, I'd love to see the next Mario & Luigi on a console (in particular the Wii-U).

I only played the gba one, but it would be cool if they made another.

I agree with you both. Yes, they should stop working on the spin-off games like Mario Party and work on more important games like Paper Mario 3D (don't get me wrong I love Paper Mario) and the Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS versions.

No sooner than 2014. Consider Kid Icarus Uprising was already in production when footage was shown when the 3ds was announced in 2009 at E3. There is no possible way a game could go into production this year and be released before the end of the year.

Seriously though... A fully 3D Mario RPG would be amazing in my eyes. Paper Mario 3DS will be awesome, but a sequel to Mario RPG or something similar would be my new favorite thing ever. I enjoyed the Mario & Luigi games, but I'm not ready for another one anytime soon.

Nope. Project Sora is a very small team. It will be released at minimum in late-2014, and at most late-2016.

Brawl had an extremely long development cycle, this will be no different.

I don't know, maybe someday. But right now they are making a Paper Mario for the system, and I am incredibly happy about that as the first two Paper Mario games were amazing, and personally more fun for me than the Mario & Luigi series. Not that I don't like them, I just think Paper Mario is the best of the Mario RPGs and so I'm not thinking about Mario & Luigi at this point.

I like it, but Paper Mario is ever so slightly better. The M&L RPGs were always incredibly linear.

I'd love to see a reboot in the series. The idea of Wario and Waluigi as a fourth one is also one I'd quite like to see. Think about it:

Superstar Saga: Mario and Luigi were the only two playable characters, setting up the basic dynamic for the entire game.

Partners In Time: Baby Mario and Baby Luigi were added to create a new gameplay dynamic.

Bowser's Inside Story: Bowser became a playable character.

Having Wario and Waluigi playable in a fourth iteration of the RPG would be another interesting dynamic - Imagine having them as a fully fleshed out team of four, with each character mapped to one of the four face buttons. It wouldn't disrupt the traditional gameplay but expand upon it. Also, the 3DS' jump in power from the 3DS would make this perfectly possible, and imagine the possibility of a showdown: Mario/Luigi/Wario/Waluigi Versus Bowser/Kamek/King Boo/Petey Piranha!

Since the 3DS is getting Paper Mario 3 (Super Paper Mario is not Paper Mario 3, It's Super Paper Mario) they should do a M&L on the Wii U with maybe 3D models, but 2d HD sprites would be great as well.

I want it to return and if it were to return it would be like weegees story for it (on the third page) but with princess shroob or queen shroob (forget which one) because in the easter egg where you fight the shroobs in the big piece of ice you can see the outline of princess shroob or queen shroob ( again forget which on), you would fight her but realize fawful is the king.

I love this series and the only thing I found wrong with PiT was the humor. But I have never played an RPG with a battle system that really felt so hands on.

I think the series should continue. The games are really creative and aren't overused like most of the other Mario series.

My favorite was Mario & Luigi SuperStar Saga. I thought that was the hardest one out of the series, and also the longest.

Beautiful idea. Daisy is at Peach's Castle having tea with Peach, Mario and Luigi are doing their own thing and you see Wario and Waluigi sneaking around looking for anything of value to steal. There is an explosion and Bowser walks in with a bunch of Koopas and Goombas and kidnaps the princess' and takes anything and everything of value prompting Mario, Luigi, Wario and Waluigi to chase after him in their respective pairings. The teams separately reach Bowsers castle and break in and make their way to Bowser. They all come in to Bowsers throne room to see him with a pile of gold and the princess'. Before the epic fight scene begins you hear explosions and Bowsersmen start running around the castle, scared and confused as a Koopa reports to Bowser that "his special prisoners" have broken out and are destroying the castle. Bowser immediately panics leaving the pairs of brothers, the gold, and the princess' behind to go down to the basement level to take care of the problem. The two pairs make haste and follow after hime after they untie the princess' to find out that the "special prisoners" were surviving Shroobs that Bowsers had frozen in his basement, being led by the Elder Princess Shroob. After a big conflict between the pairs of brothers, the Shroob forces and Bowser and his army. The brothers are thrown out of the castle and the Shroobs make a tactical retreat, while Bowser and his forces remain in the castle with the princess' that had failed to escape in time. Knowing that both Bowser and the Shroobs have big plans in mind, they split up into the respective pairs and head off. One pair to battle against Bowser and his army, and the other to fight the Elder Shroob Princess and her Shroob forces, while in the middle of the story they swap roles to fight the other enemy forces and meeting up occasionally and, at some times, working together as a team of four. This all leads up to an all out war between the Shroobs and Bowsers army that ends in the defeat of Bowser and the Elder Shroob Princess taking a large boost in power as she makes her home in Bowsers castle. The two pairs are now prompted to work together as one team to take down the, now powered up, Elder Shroob Princess, with her captives, the Princess', and Bowser, in the new Castle Shroob. Hope you all liked that, I know I love it.

They are great games! But BIS was wayyyy too short imo. I would buy one for 3DS though, and I'm sure one is coming eventually!

I havent finished any of the titles but I would definitely buy another installment on the 3DS. As long as Miyamoto doesnt come around and "Sticker Star-itize" it and take out most of the elements that make it an RPG.

I would love to see that....but it would create a conflict with Sticker Star in a way. Sticker Star is WAY too similar to the M&L games from the DS (not too similar to SuperStar Saga) and it kinda feels like it's trying to appeal to both Paper Mario fans and M&L fans. I'd love to see a new M&L game, but make it an big upgrade compared to the games on DS so it won't fall into the "feels to similar to X game", in this case Sticker Star. It should also have 3D graphics (not the 3D effect, 3D models and stuff) but still have the overview camera.

I'd love another Mario and Luigi game. Bowser's Inside Story was really good. They must keep experience though. Taking that away in Sticker Star is the one thing keeping me from buying it.

I agree. If a new M&L game arrived on the 3DS, I wouldn't want them to take any risks removing necessary things, like exp. I would welcome a new game on the 3DS if they don't butcher it too much.

And I think that for the attacks they should take from Superstar Saga. Have certain attacks that each pair can use with each other, utilizing their equipment if me necessary, and there can even be a few four way attacks that all the bros do together. These attacks would also require sufficient SP that each pair would have a shared pool of

So I am sooo hoping this happens it needs to happen. Here is a little list I made for what they could do to make the fans happy. (probably wont happen)

1. Bosses - Maybe revenge of Cackletta but in my taste putting Wario and Waluigi would make it a crazy story.... ( you control both teams as a group. Mario&Luigi Wario&Waluigi)

The sad thing is this is true. Also, the first M&L game on the DS came a year after launch. Then the next came 4 years later. So, hopefully they reveal one soon. The DS had 2 so the 3DS should at least get 1. Let's just hope they don't mess up the series as badly as Paper Mario.

Well, call it fan service all you want, but for example not releasing a single 2d Metroid game on DS is also a hole in nintendo's wallet which could have been easily filled, for example.
3 great castlevania games showed that the DS was the perfect console for that kind of game.

But since the Mario & Luigi series had 2 successfull entries on the DS, I think it's only a matter of time for one to appear on the 3DS.

I think it's time for Mario to take a chill pill.

Yes! While I never played Superstar Saga, I have played both Partners in Time and Bowser's Inside Story, and loved both. I really hope for a new one. Possibly at this e3?

Superstar Saga was by the far the best! I've found them getting a bit samey as the series progresses and the items never seemed as cool as Bros Moves. I also think they dropped in dificulty. I remember in Bowsers castle: having to fight all of his kids in one long dungeon, then Fawful, then Bowser posessed by cCckelta then Cackleta by herself! Was great fun, but really tough.

Superstar Saga in the eShop would be a dream come true, otherwise I will have to pick up online when I move backe home and have my DS lite. Really been itching to play it again.

Maybes a 3D outing would be enough to rejuvinate the series. But I agree with Cannavro I'm craving a side scrolling Metroid more and it's a crime we didn't get one on the DS.

As many have said already, Nintendo's iconic role-playing game is shifting from the Paper Mario series to the Mario & Luigi series. I wouldn't say Sticker Star was bad, but it definitely has lost a lot of its key role playing mechanics. Dream Team looks much more in-depth and interesting. Hope to see a surprise appearance from Geno and Mallow, but that's pushing it.

I was surprised too at the anouncement!

I know much hasn't been shown, but just from what's been shown so far, I think this game will turn out to be a way better RPG than Paper Mario: Sticker Star.

Very much looking forwards to this more than any other 3DS game at the moment!

I don't think Sticker Star can even be classified as an RPG, at least not in the same way that the first two are. It's an action game with turn based segments. At least Super Paper Mario knew what it was :/

Dream Team is undoubtedly my most hyped retail game after this ND. Summer isn't too far away, and there are still those eShop deals and such to make the time go by quicker.

I really enjoyed the last few M&L RPG adventures, and I'd think they'd be at home on the 3DS. Random as hell sometimes, but a good solid adventure/RPG game hopefully, I'll be picking this up if poss.

I'm not so sure if I like the art style, it looks a bit weird. But I will wait until I've seen it in motion before I judge.

I worshipped Superstar Saga when it came out, but neither of the DS titles really impressed me. I just barely bothered to beat Partner's in Time once and Bowser's Inside Story I never finished. Superstar Saga on the other hand, I beat at least 4 times...

Same. I remember when SuperStar Saga was first announced. I was all over that game. Obsessed over it. Kept up on its news. Adored it from beginning to end when I got it. And yet, Partners in Time was lackluster in comparison. I DID finish Bowser's Inside Story and enjoyed it more, but SuperStar Saga remains the fave.

I really hope this'll be the first one to match that feeling SSS gave me.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star was an RPG? 0.0... XD(Seriously though I played that game and it was barely an RPG.)

I really want to see more of this in action.

I adore the sprite art style this series has, so yeah, it does look a bit weird to see it in a 3D art style now. I'm still liking what I've seen of the new art style so far and how it still kind of captures that Mario & Luigi style look in 3D.
